Title: Resources

1
Resources
  • Mrs. Lehner
  • Mr. McCollum

2
  • Law of Conservation of Matter
  • Matter cannot be created nor destroyed
  • Atoms are always accounted for
  • Remember atom inventory?!?!?!

3
  • Everything on this planet is composed of a
combination of the about 90 elements found in
    nature including you!!

Each element is composed of atoms of the same
type   Different elements are composed of
different types of atoms
4
ATOMS VS. MOLECULES
Atoms The atom is the smallest part of the
simplest form of matter.
Elements The simplest form of matter

Molecules Two or more atoms bonded
together (of the same or different elements)
like O2 or like H20
5
2H2 O2 2H2O
Reactant Starting Material, found on LEFT side
of arrow
Product What is made, found on the RIGHT side
of arrow
Subscripts little numbers, tell how many atoms
of the element it follow (unless there are
parenthesis)
Coefficients Big numbers in front of molecules,
multiplied by everything after it, until you hit
the end of the atom/molecule
6
LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS
Mass is NOT created or destroyed in a chemical
reaction (so you better have the same number of
atoms of each element before and after chemical
reaction.or Mama Nature is going to be Mad!!)
7
Balancing Equations
  • If matter cannot be created nor destroyed, then
there has to the same amount of atoms in products
    and reactants

8
Practice
  • __Zn __HCl ----gt __ZnCl2 __H2
  • __CH4 __O2 --gt __CO2 __H2O
  • __Fe __O2 ---gt __Fe2O3
  • __NaCl __BeF2 --gt __NaF __BeCl2

9
A.5 Resources
  • Materials that can be withdrawn from the natural
    environment to satisfy human needs
  • Renewable Can be replenished through by natural
    processes
  • Non-Renewable Cannot be replenished or take long
    periods of time

Waste
  • Waste generated by anything we no longer need
  • Ex Cheerios Box, Newspaper
  • Each person throws about 4 lb of stuff a day
  • Limiting Waste
  • Recycling Reforming into new materials
  • Re-using Using the same materials
  • Which is better??
