Coffee-addict.
Mouse-dependent.
Constantly on survival Modem.
Life? What life?
The problem was my unhappiness with this computer
lifestyle. I'm really tired of sitting indoors
looking into a piece of glass, getting sore eyes
and sore mouse wrist, and at the end of the day,
nothing tangible to show. Spending day and night
in back rooms with computers, it's easy to lose
touch with what's happening in the street, in the
cafes, in public meetings etc.

10A new generation of devices is moving computing
power off the desktop and into everyday
items--TVs, phones and even park benches--making
access quick, easy and less costly. Not Very

Ambient computing, which involves moving
computing power from the desktop and embedding it
in everyday objects, is supposed to help make
this happen. "We need to translate technologies
into things that people like and understand,"
says Irene McWilliam, a senior manager in design
research at Dutch electronics giant Philips and
coordinating partner for the E.U.'s Connected
Community research projects.

13 Technological Convergence What Nicholas
Negroponte labeled the transformation of "atoms
to bits," the digitization of all media content.
When words, images and sounds are transformed
into digital information, we expand the potential
relationships between them and enable them to
flow across platforms.
Henry Jenkins, director of the Program in
Comparative Media Studies at MIT

29The Future As the song says, "the future's so
bright, I gotta wear shades." Many of today's
wireless limitations will go away as advances in
bandwidth, protocols and hardware come to light.

are low, if you don't mind slow access and
limited functionality. There is definitely an
industry shift from a PC-centric Internet to a
mobile one. Jump in at any time.
