When and Where was he born
  • He was born on July 12, 1864 in Diamond Grove,
    Missouri. George was born right after slavery
    was abolished.

Early Life
  • In 1874 he left the farm where he was born
    and eventually settled in Minneapolis, Kansas. He
    had to move because there were no schools for
    blacks. He said good-bye to his adopted parents,
    Susan and Moses Carter. He went to Minneapolis
    High School in Kansas.

Achievements
  • His fame was based on his research of crops
    to cotton, such as peanuts and sweet potatoes. He
    was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of
    Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce of Britain in
    1916. George Washington Carver created over 100
    products made from peanuts that were useful for
    the house and farm, including cosmetics, dyes,
    paints, plastics, gasoline, and nitroglycerin.

When he was born
  • He was born July 2, 1908 in Baltimore, Maryland.

Early Life
  • His father William Marshall, instilled in him
    from youth an appreciation for the United States
    Constitution.
  • After he graduated Fredrick Douglas High School
    in Baltimore,Thurgood Marshall went to an all
    male school at Lincoln University in Oxford,
    Pennsylvania. Among his many fellow classmates
    was the already renowned poet, Langston Hughes.

  • It was Marshall who won the most important legal
    case of the century, Brown v. Board of Education,
    ending the legal segregation of black and white
    children in public schools. Marshall was the
    nations first African American Supreme Court
    Justice. He promoted affirmative action
    preferences, set asides and other race conscious
    policies. This was his remedy for the damage
    remaining from the nations history of slavery
    and racial bias.

What are his achievements?
  • He was accepted at Howard University Law School.
    He led a civil rights revolution in the 20th
    century that for ever changed the landscape of
    American society. But he is the least well known
    of the three leading black figures of this
    century. It was Marshall who ended segregation
    in the United States. He won court victories,
    breaking the color line in housing,
    transportation, and voting, all of which
    overturned the (Separate-but-Equal) apartheid of
    American life in the first half of the century.

  • Thurgood Marshall died on January 24th 1993.
    After Marshall died there was still no
    authoritative, thorough account of his life and
    the impact of his work had on the nation.
