Modern Fantasy and Science Fiction Descriptions

Modern fantasy contains elements of unexplainable
magic. Fantasy literature goes beyond the known
world and creates a new or transformed world.
Low fantasy is actually set in the primary world,
but magical elements make the story impossible.
Example Charlottes Web by E. B. White
In high fantasy, the author creates a new,
secondary world that operates and is constrained
by its own set of logical rules.
Example Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
by J. K. Rowling
Science fiction builds on real developments in
science to create a version of reality that is
different from the one we now inhabit.

Fantasy and Science Fiction

Fantasy could never be. Science fiction has the
possibility of happening within some time and in
some place.
A story that is clearly impossible is called
fantasy a story with aspects of the improbable
is called science fiction.

Evolution of Modern Fantasy

Modern fantasy evolved from the traditional
literature which arose from oral storytelling.
Literary folktales/fairy tales replicate
traditional folktales but have a known author.

Duckling
Embellished fairy tales build on established,
traditional fairy tales but try to elaborate on
characters motives and values.
