  • 1. Used in the middle of a compound sentence.
  • 2. Ex. Stacy likes softball. Stacy likes
    volleyball better
  • - Stacy likes softball however, she
  • likes volleyball better.
  • 3. Use a semicolon before a conjunctive adverb
    and a comma after it.

The Little Things
  • In this chapter, we have been talking about the
    little words that hold a sentence together.
  • Last week we learned about prepositions and we
    now know that anywhere a mouse can go
  • Yesterday, we started learning about conjunctions
    and how they connect parts of sentences.

  • Find the prepositional phrase in the following
    sentence. Is it an adjective or an adverb
    phrase?
  • Parisians and visitors alike gather outside these

  • Also find the conjunction. Is it
    coordinating or correlative?

Conjunctions are Important
  • But there is another type of conjunction that you
    have not studiedor HAVE YOU???
  • These are called
    Conjunctive Adverbs
    and, believe it or not,
    you already know
    them EXTENSIVELY!!!

  • You can use a special kind of adverb instead of a
    coordinating or correlative conjunction to join
    the simple sentences in a compound sentence.

    conjunctive adverbs

Conjunctive Adverbs (an example)
  • Lizzie is a good basketball player however, Kurt
    is not.
  • Some European countries use the same currency
    therefore, in many countries you can pay the same
    way.
  • A roller coaster is a great thrill ride in fact,
    it can be downright scary!

How do you do it?
  • When two simple sentences are joined with a
    conjunctive adverb, a semicolon always appears
    before the second sentence.
  • The conjunctive adverb is flexible. It can
    appear at the beginning, the middle, or the end
    of the second sentence.

  • When it comes at the beginning or the end, it is
    set off with a comma.
  • Chinese cooks often stir-fry their food
    therefore, they must cut it into small pieces.
  • Stir-frying should be done quickly the wok must
    be very hot, consequently.
