Title: The Sloan-C Initiative in Online Faculty Training and Certification
1The Sloan-C Initiative in Online Faculty
Training and Certification
- Presented by

2Teaching may be the one thing that institutions
of higher education generally do not teach. Why?
3Possible reasons why there has seldom been any
faculty training or certification at universities
- The pedagogy is determined solely by the subject
matter? - The art of college teaching is so dependent on
intangibles? - College teachers have already learned pedagogy by
being students? - Formal instruction could impair the spontaneity
of lessons?
4But online learning adds not only new
technologies but also a new paradigm. In
consequence
- The geographic classroom cannot simply be
transferred to an online format - The roles of teacher and learner need to be
redefined - Rapid changes in technology mean that methods
must constantly be updated - There is now a standard of comparison, so
teaching, even in a geographic classroom, can no
longer be taken for granted.
5Reasons for a Certificate Endorsed by Sloan-C in
Online Faculty Training
- Though many universities offer certificates in
online teaching, none have the wide recognition
of Sloan-C - Smaller and mid-sizes institutions do not
themselves have the resources to offer a
comprehensive program in faculty training - A certification endorsed by Sloan-C would help to
standardize effective practices
6The Sloan-C Special Interest Group in Online
Faculty Training (SIG-OFT) was set up to explore
the prospect of certification.

11As Sloan-C begins a program of faculty training
and certification, the role of the SIG-OFC will
change. It can
- Provide feedback on the success of the program
- Continue to communicate needs of the member
colleges to Sloan-C - Serve as a reservoir of information and expertise
- Continue as a forum for collegial sharing,
discussion and debate
