• It is not based on word memorization
• It allows students to investigate and understand
  word patterns
• It involves word recognition, vocabulary, phonics
  and spelling
• It is a cognitive process, students are thinking!

• It is differential instruction.
• It follows a sequence of development.
• It requires teacher and students to

• Spelling rules are not dictated, spelling
  patterns are discovered by students.

Word Sorts/Word Study

• Sound Sorts pictures, word sorts
• Meaning sorts homophones, concept (themes)
• Pattern sorts word family, rhyme
• Sorts are not always teacher directed
• In open sorts students create their own
  categories and students are extended.
