Creating a Brochure with MS WORD

A brochure in Word 2000 is made up of a series of
panels

Before You Begin
  • Gather all the information required to prepare
    your brochure
  • data (jot notes) from web sites, encyclopedias,
    magazines, newspapers etc.
  • images from web, clip art, scanning etc. should
    be in a common location (images folder for
    example)
  • Ensure you have access to computer with Office
    2000 (Citrix users have Office 2003)

Layout Your Brochure
  • On a sheet of paper sketch out where your data
    and images will go.
  • Use the two images at left to visualize how the
    pages will look when folded and how you must
    place the material.

Notes on Images
  • When you insert an image, you will see it
    surrounded by a black box with black squares in
    the corners and sides. A picture toolbar should
    appear (if not, click View gt Toolbars gt Pictures)
  • Click the Text Wrapping icon

  • From the text wrap choices available, choose
    TIGHT.
  • Notice how the black box and black squares
    (called handles) have disappeared
  • White handles now appear and text will flow
    around the image.

  • open Word 2000 (Start gt Programs gt Microsoft
    Office Tools gt Microsoft Word choose paper size
    and select landscape
  • DO NOT click OK

  • click on the margins tab and set your top and
    bottom margins to 2.54 cm (1 inch) set left and
    right margins to 1 cm (0.39 inches)

  • Choose Format gt Columns
  • select 3 columns
  • Spacing between columns must be twice the
    left/right margins
  • spacing 2 cm (.78 inches
  • Click OK

  • Notice in the image below how your ruler will
    look in Word. (The dotted lines will not
    appearthey are here to direct your eyes only.)
  • The left and right margin markers will appear
    only in the active columncolumn 2 in the image
    below. There is no need for you to adjust or
    change these markers.

  • Begin keying in your material, inserting images,
    in the left most column. When you are ready to
    move to the next column, choose Insert gt Break
    and click in the Column Break radio button. Click
    OK and your cursor is moved to the top of the
    next column.

  • The program will start a new column automatically
  • if you key in enough material to reach the bottom
    of one column the program will start at the top
    of the next column automatically, just as it
    starts a new page automatically when you have
    enough text on one page.
  • When you are ready to begin a new page, hold down
    the control key and press enter.
  • a new page is started
  • the 3 column setup continues from the first page
    to the second page

You should now be ready to create your special
brochure.
