What is Bone Morphogenetic Protein?

• Stimulates a patient's own cells to induce the
  formation of bone and cartilage
• Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2,
  or rhBMP-2
• Generates and repairs bone faster and more
  reliably
• Latest in bone growth enhancement

• 1965 Dr. Marshall Urist, UCLA Department of
  Orthopedic Surgery in Los Angeles, CA discovered
  that the proteins needed to heal bone was inside
  bones
• 1997 First clinical trial with 11 patients
• 2001 New Hampshire Spine Institute

Applications

• Available in an oral form
• A supplement for bone and joint health
• Regenerative Medicine
• Delivered to the site of the fracture
• Released gradually to allow bone formation
• Delivery in a purified collagen matrix

• Osteoinductive characteristics make BMPs valuable
  as an alternative to bone grafts
• Other methods of delivering BMPs to patients are

  complications of bone harvesting or grafts

• BMP has only been FDA approved for one type of
  spinal fusion
• Expensive
• Side effects are not fully understood
