Ancient Egypt

2
Pharaoh
  • A Pharaoh was the most important and powerful
person in the kingdom. He was the head of the
government and high priest of every temple. The
people of Egypt considered the pharaoh to be a
half-man, half-god. The Pharaoh owned all of
    Egypt.

Pyramids
  • The Pharaohs, the rulers of Egypt, built the
pyramids as tombs for themselves. The Pharaohs
built all the pyramids during the Old Kingdom, so
that the greatest remains of Ancient Egypt are
also some of the earliest to have been built.
  • The first Pharaohs built simpler tombs, called
mastabas. These mastabas were square buildings
with a room inside for the coffin and the mummy
and some things to take with you to the afterlife.

Slaves of the Pharaoh
  • The most famous story about Egyptian slaves is
the one in the Bible about how the Jews were
slaves in Egypt, about 1400-1200 B.C. Because the
Egyptians had just conquered Israel at this time,
probably many Jews were enslaved about
this time. Then when the Egyptian New
    Kingdom collapsed, they stopped
being able to enslave the Jews.

5
Tutankhamun
  • The most famous Egyptian pharaoh today
  • is, without doubt, Tutankhamun. However,
before the spectacular discovery of his almost
intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings in
November 1922, Tutankhamun was only a little
known figure of the late 18th Dynasty.

6
  • Tutankhamun was probably born at Akhetaten which
was the capital city of Egypt. He was born in
about the year 1346 BC. He became pharaoh at the
tender age of nine in 1337 BC and reigned during
the 18th Dynasty when the Egyptian Empire was at
its height. He reigned from about 1337 to 1328
    BC.
  • His tomb was
    discovered by a
    team of
    British
    archaeologists
    in 1922,
    nearly
    3000 years after
    his death.

7
Cleopatra
  • Cleopatra was the name of several women in
ancient Egypt. The most famous one was Cleopatra
VII, born in 69 B.C. in Alexandria. Her
    father was Ptolemy
    XII, who was pharaoh
    when Cleopatra was born.
