Title: Doctored Magazine Covers

1
Doctored Magazine Covers
  • Don't always believe what you see when it comes
    to photos.

2
  • She's a Franken-friend! Jennifer Aniston's
publicist said that this June 2003 Redbook cover
was a mash-up of three different photos the
    actress reportedly considered legal action.
Redbook said it only changed the color of her
    shirt and lengthened her hair.

3
  • The very next month, Redbook did it again. On the
magazine's July 2003 cover, Julia Roberts' head
comes from a paparazzi shot taken at the 2002
People's Choice awards. Her body, meanwhile, is
from the "Notting Hill" movie premiere four years
    earlier.

4
  • The March 7, 2005, issue of Newsweek magazine
combined Martha Stewart's face with a
professional model's body to show what she might
look like when she got out of prison. The
magazine noted the photo was a fake, but some
journalists said that the image could have easily
been mistaken for the real thing.

5
  • This Star magazine cover trumpets a great scoop
Brad and Angelina caught together on vacation!
Only, not so much. The magazine doctored two
separate ocean-side pictures of each actor.
Tucked away on page 8 was a disclaimer noting the
image is a "composite of two photographs."

6
Using Photoshop to Alter Images
  • As you have seen, it is amazing what photo
    editors can do to photos
  • While their intentions sometimes seem harmless,
they can have a major impact on many people
  • Consider the messages these altered photos could
    have

Evolution
  • Dove "Evolution" Video

8
Spears Airbrushed Images
  • Britney Spears revealed her pre-airbrushed Candy
campaign photos alongside the digitally enhanced
images. The singer poses in a pink bathing suit
for the ad. In the retouched version, her back
tattoo is gone and her figure is trimmer.

9
  • Kim Kardashian's always championed her curvy
figure. Recently, Kardashian fought back against
photoshop allegations of her March 2009 Complex
magazine photo spread, saying "So what I have a
little cellulite. What curvy girl doesn't!?" A
before shot of Kardashian was featured on
Complex.com for several hours, before the
magazine replaced it with a Photoshopped version
-- which cropped inches off the reality star's
legs, whittled her waist and brightened her skin.

10
  • She has graced the cover of hundreds of
magazines, but that doesn't mean that supermodel
Kate Moss is always camera-ready. Moss arrived at
    Heathrow Airport Oct. 30, 2008, makeup-less,
exposing a blotchy complexion and faded sore
above her lip, pictured left. She debuted a
completely different and refined look on the
cover of British Vogue magazine that same month.

11
  • The June/July issue of Men's Fitness enhanced
Andy Roddick's bicep muscles so much so that
Roddick said he stopped in his tracks when he saw
the cover while walking through the airport. The
tennis star dubbed the hulking masses "22-inch
guns" and wrote on his blog, "If you can manage
to stop laughing at the cover long enough, check
    out the article inside."

12
  • A January 2003 GQ cover shaved several inches off
actress Kate Winslet's thighs. Winslet called the
retouching "excessive." "I can tell you they've
reduced the size of my legs by about a third,"
    she said about the image.

13
Discussion!
  • So
  • Why should we care about altered images??
  • What impacts does this have on males and females
    in our society?
