Title: The 5 Components of Health Related Exercise.

1
The 5 Components of Health Related Exercise.
  • Mr. P. Leighton
  • St. Marys 11-18 High School.

2
After Todays Session
  • You will understand how and why the 5 components
of health related exercise need to be developed.
  • They are
  • CV Fitness
  • Muscular Strength
  • Muscular Endurance
  • Flexibility
  • Body Composition
  • You will have made a provisional start to your
    Personal Exercise Programme (PEP).

3
Quick Test (5 mins)
  • Explain the terms
  • Health
  • Exercise
  • Fitness
  • Performance
  • Remember Definitions are important- if you
cannot explain the terms then you cannot access
    higher marks.

4
Cardiovascular Fitness (CV Fitness)
  • The Efficiency of the Heart, Lungs and Blood
Vessels to deliver O2 to working muscle tissue.
  • CV fitness is the most important aspect of HRF.
  • This fitness is concerned with long hard matches-
it is essential to developing other parts of
    fitness.
  • Key Term
  • The ability to exercise the entire body for long
    periods of time.

5
Muscular Strength.
  • Enables the lifting of very heavy weights.
  • This can be developed by lifting very heavy
    weights with few repetitions.
  • Good in Olympic Weightlifting or Scrums in RU.
  • Steroids are also associated with this area-
    although steroids are illegal.
  • Key Term
  • The amount of force a muscle can exert against a
    resistance.

6
Muscular Endurance.
  • Enables muscles to be exercised repeatedly
without getting unduly tired e.g. Running or
    Swimming.
  • Exercises that test this are press-ups, Sit-ups
    etc.
  • Games such as tennis are also included.
  • What about everyday life?
  • Key Term
  • The ability to use voluntary muscles many times
    without getting tired.

7
Flexibility.
  • Flexibility is often neglected but is needed in
    all areas.
  • Touch your toes!
  • Gymnasts are often the most flexible- badminton
    players etc.
  • Q What activities can help improve flexibility?
  • Q Why is this important for later life?
  • Key Term
  • The range of movement possible at a joint.

8
Body Composition.
  • This is influenced by genetics although it can be
    influenced by diet and exercise.
  • Whats your Body Composition?
  • Elite athletes work hard to develop better body
    composition.
  • Body Composition can be controlled with a well
    organised PEP.
  • Key Term
  • The percentage of body weight that is fat, muscle
    and bone.

9
Task BMI Index
  • Chose 2 sports performers and calculate their BMI
    Index.
  • Do this by dividing weight (KGs) by height (M2)
  • Are the results surprising?

10
Health Related Exercise in Action
  • Not all aspects of HRE are needed in equal
    amounts or at all.
  • Marathon runners do not need muscular strength
    but do need muscular endurance.
  • Flexibility will also enable them to have a good
    stride length.
  • CV Fitness will need to be high to allow them to
    compete at a high level.
  • Body Composition?

11
PEP Homework.
  • Make a note of your favourite activity (This can
be one from PE or outside of school)
  • Now list the relevant Health-related fitness
    aspects in order of importance.
  • Also note down how these aspects can be tested.
  • This will give us a good start to your PEP-
Deciding your activity and the areas you know the
most about (making it easier to write about).
