Youre right, that lacked voice!!
3
What we should know
  • You should have a variety of sentence lengths in
    your writing.
  • (Not all short, not all long mix it up!!)
  • Types of sentences
  • Simple sentences
  • Compound Sentences
  • Complex Sentences

4
Simple sentences
  • This is Spot. He is my dog. He can run fast. He
loves to run. He chases his tail. He chases the
ball. He chases cars. I love Spot. He is the best
    dog ever!
  • It gets tedious/boring reading sentences that are
    all the same length.
  • Young writers start out by using simple
    sentences. (As above!)
  • But, so do skillful, experienced writers!

5
Compound sentences
  • A compound sentence is two simple sentences
    written as one.
  • This is my dog Spot, and he loves to run fast.
He chases his tail, he chases balls, and he
chases cars. I love Spot, and he is the best dog
    ever!
  • Compound sentences require punctuation (comma)
    and conjunctions (and, but, so,)

6
Power Sentences
  • A sentence has power when
  • it is well-developed and detailed
  • it makes an impact!
  • it communicates concisely
  • it is clear in meaning
  • it is fluent (flows nicely)
  • it conveys voice
  • it is eloquent (graceful, stylish, polished)
  • it varies in length

7
Power Sentences
  • Sentence
  • I love doing my best and impressing myself and
    the people around me.
  • Power Sentence
  • I love exceeding not only my own expectations,
but also those of others, for there is no
  • than stupefying the people around you.

greater success
8
Power Sentences
  • Sentence
  • I miss the days when I could just be myself.
  • Power Sentence
  • I miss the days where I was not ABASHED and
APPREHENSIVE to be myself, to make my own
decisions, my own mistakes the days I did not
have to worry about being ridiculed or disparaged
by the words and judgements of others.

9
Power Sentences
  • Sentence
  • If we keep polluting our environment, it will be
us who suffer in the end.
  • Power Sentence
  • When the humans majestic golden crown rusts
into dusts of grey and bronze ash, the one with
blood smattered armour will be Mother Nature so
that we will be the one to fall off the horse
    first.

This one is very high level with metaphorical
language!!
