Multiplying by FOIL
When having to multiply two binomials together,
we need to have a method in place to properly
multiply the terms together. This method is
called FOIL.

FOIL First, Outside, Inside, Last

• When multiplying two binomials together, we need
  to use the FOIL method to complete the work.
  Lets look at multiplying two binomials (x 5)(x
  3) following the First, Outside, Inside, Last
  method to multiply.
• FIRST (x )(x - ) x2
  We multiplied the first terms in
• 
  
  each parenthesis together.
• OUTSIDE (x )( - 3) -3x
  We multiplied the outer most
• 
  
  terms in each parenthesis.
• INSIDE ( 5)(x - ) 5x
  We multiplied the inner
• 
  
  terms in each parenthesis.
• LAST ( 5)( - 3)
  -15 We multiplied the last
• 
  
  terms in each parenthesis.
• Putting each piece back together we have
• x2 3x 5x 15 x2 2x - 15
