Title: Modern Judaism

1
Modern Judaism
OBJ Students will identify the important
aspects of Judaism and complete the Modern
Judaism assignment.
2
  • Today, there are three main branches to the
    Jewish religion Orthodox, Reform, and
    Conservative.

3
  • Orthodox Jews hold tightly to traditional
    practices.
  • These include restrictions on what is fit, or
    kosher to eat.

4
  • Driving a car, movies, and other entertainment
    are forbidden on the Sabbath.
  • Hasidic Jews are a smaller group among this
    branch of Judaism.

5
  • Reform Jews believe that old customs sometimes
    wear out.
  • They have relaxed dietary restrictions and also
permit non-religious activities on the Sabbath.
  • Conservative Jews try to find a middle way
    between these two groups.

6
  • All three of these groups, however, have common
practices that make up the core of Jewish belief
    and practice.
  • They attend services in a synagogue or temple.

7
  • A rabbi, or teacher, leads the service. He or
she studies the Torah, the first five books of
the Bible, which is written in ancient Hebrew.

8
  • The Talmud, which has been called the oral
Torah, is an important Jewish document that
    interprets the Torah.

9
  • Celebrations are also held in the home. One of
the things that has made Judaism survive is that
    every home is a synagogue.

10
  • The Jewish year revolved around a number of
    festivals and holy days.

11
  • The Sabbath, starting at sundown on Friday and
lasting until sundown on Saturday, is the most
    important day of the week.
  • Of all of the Jewish observances, this is the
most important. It is celebrated in both
    synagogues and in homes.

12
  • Other major holy days in Judaism are the New
    Year, or Rosh Hashanah

13
  • The angel of death passes over the Hebrews in
    Egypt, or Passover.

14
  • The Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippur.
  • The festival of lights, or Hanukkah.

15
  • When a Jewish boy is 13 years old, he becomes
Bar Mitzvah, and in many congregations girls
become Bat Mitzvah. They are held to be adults,
responsible for fulfilling the commandments of
    the Torah.
