Title: EML 4550: Engineering Design Methods

1
EML 4550 Engineering Design Methods
  • Design For Quality
  • Engineering Design, by G.E. Dieter Chapter 12

2
Total Quality Management (TQM)
  • Definition of quality the ability (degree of
    accomplishments/excellence) of a product or
service to satisfy the requirements of
    clients/customers
  • Total Quality Management (TQM) is a comprehensive
and structured strategy to manage the quality of
products and services by making improvements
    through continuous feedback and assessment.
  • In recent years, TQM requirements have been
defined by organization to adherent to
established standards, such as the International
    Organization for Standardization's (ISO, 1946)
    standards series.
  • ISO 9000 (1987, 2000) family addresses "quality
    management".
  • ISO 14000 (1996, 2004) family addresses
    "environmental management

3
ISO Management System Standards
  • Plan-Do-Check-Act is the operating principle of
    the ISOs management system standards
  • Plan set clear objectives and develop plans
    accordingly
  • Do implementation
  • Check assessment based on pre-determined
    objectives and metrics
  • Act continuous evaluations leading to subsequent
    improvements

4
Quality Management Principles
  • The eight quality management principles for the
    revised ISO 90002000 series are
  • Principle 1 Customer focus
  • Principle 2 Leadership
  • Principle 3 Involvement of people
  • Principle 4 Process approach
  • Principle 5 System approach to management
  • Principle 6 Continual improvement
  • Principle 7 Factual approach to decision making
  • Principle 8 Mutually beneficial supplier
    relationships
  • The next step

5
Quality Control Tools
  • Quality Functional Deployment (QFD)
  • Design for Manufacturing and Assembly (DFMA)
  • Taguchi Method
  • Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA)
  • Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Six Sigma
  • DMAIC Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control
    usually for existing processes
  • DMADV Define, Measure, Analyze, Design, Verify
    for new processes
