authorship is as good as that of any other
Pauline epistle except Romans and 1 Corinthians
Internal Evidence The letter claims Pauline
authorship (2 Tim. 11) and contains the typical
Pauline characteristics

Origin/Recipients
2 Timothy
Paul penned 2 Timothy to his long-time traveling
companion, Timothy (2 Tim. 12), 5 years after
his 1st letter. Assuming Timothy still remained
in Ephesus (1 Tim. 13b), 2 Timothy also had the
same destination (2 Tim. 116-18 419).
The letter was written from Rome (117 29)
during Paul's 2nd Roman imprisonment after his
1st defense before the Imperial Court (416-17).

Occasion
Occasion
2 Timothy
238
When Paul wrote 2 Timothy in AD 67 he was an
experienced inmate in several cities
  • Jerusalem 10 years earlier (May 29-June 9, 57)
  • Caesarea 8-10 years earlier (June 57-Aug 59)
  • Rome 5-7 years earlier (Feb 60-March 62)

Having spent nearly 5 of the past 10 years behind
bars, he knew about prisons and political
procedures. He knew that this second Roman
imprisonment could only result in execution (2
Tim. 46-8).
Since Paul did not expect to live much longer in
the Roman jail, he requested Timothy to hurry to
him before winter (2 Tim. 49, 21).

God in the face of hardship and false teachers.

Argument
Argument
2 Timothy
239
  • This letter addresses the man Timothy more than
his church (like the 1st letter).
  • With so many falling away just before Paul's
death, he carefully chooses his words in perhaps
his last statements to Timothy in order to assure
that Timothy himself would remain true to the
    faith until death.
  • The apostle accomplishes this by exhorting him to
persevere in present hardships with godly
character (chs. 1-2) because the future will even
    be more difficult (chs. 3-4).
  • He will especially have to fight apostasy by
faithfully preaching the Word of God (31045).

wondrous grace to me He hath made known, Nor why
unworthy, Christ in love redeemed me for His
own Chorus But I know whom I have believed And
am persuaded that He is able To keep that which
I've committed unto Him against that day I know

Is anything more powerful against heresy than
God's Wordmethods, logic, ignoring false
teaching, etc.? While proper teaching is not
the only thing needed, it is the most important
thing.

    hardworking farmer?
  • 2. Are you experiencing apostasy in your
ministry? What can you do to survive?
  • 3. Reflect on what kind of testimony you would
write at the end of your life. What words of
encouragement and challenge for the next

WHEN WE SEE JESUS
Oft-times the day seems long, our trials hard to
bear, We're tempted to complain, to murmur and
despair But Christ will soon appear to catch
His Bride away, All tears forever over in God's
eternal day.
Chorus It will be worth it all when we see
Jesus, Life's trials will seem so small when we
see Christ One glimpse of His dear face all
sorrow will erase, So bravely run the race till
we see Christ.
52
Some times the sky looks dark with not a ray of
light, We're tossed and driven on, no human help
in sight But there is one in heav'n who knows
our deepest care, Let Jesus solve your problem
just go to Him in prayer
Chorus It will be worth it all when we see
Jesus, Life's trials will seem so small when we
see Christ One glimpse of His dear face all
sorrow will erase, So bravely run the race till
we see Christ.
53
Life's day will soon be o'er, all storms forever
past, We'll cross the great divide to glory safe
at last We'll share the joys of heav'n a harp,
a home, a crown, The tempter will be banished,
we'll lay our burden down.
Chorus It will be worth it all when we see
Jesus, Life's trials will seem so small when we
see Christ One glimpse of His dear face all
sorrow will erase, So bravely run the race till
we see Christ.
