Plant Propagation

• Both are increasing the number of a species
• Two types of Plant Propagation
• 1) Sexual Reproduction
• 2) Asexual Propagation

Sexual Reproduction

• The union of the female and male sex cells to
  produce a seed or embryo
• Ovum Female sex cell
• Pollen Male sex cell
• Embryo (seed germ) immature plantlet
• Sexual Reproduction results in the creation of a
  genetically new individual!!

Asexual (Vegetative) Reproduction

• Production of a plant w/o uniting pollen ovum
• Known as plant cloning
• Leaves, stem, or roots may be used to grow a new
  plant
• Occurs naturally and artificially
• Produces a genetically identical plant

Two Different Types of Seeds

• 1) Monocot
• Generally from the grass family
• 2) Dicot
• Generally broad leaf plants

Monocots

• Seeds w/ 1 seed leaf
• 1 solid seed
• Leaves have parallel veins
• Roots are advantageous
• Examples
• Corn, wheat, barley, oats

Dicots

• Seeds w/ 2 seed leaves or cotyledons
• Veins are webbed
• Examples
• Beans, potatoes, sugar beats, sunflowers

Types of Flowers

• 2 Types
• 1) Perfect Flower
• 2) Imperfect Flower

• To the Left is a complete or perfect flower
• An incomplete or imperfect flower is missing one
  or more of the labeled parts

Pollination

• Transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma
  of a flower of the same species
• May be accomplished by wind, gravity, bees, or
  manually

• Fertilization
• The union of pollen ovum
• Germination
• The sprouting of a seed
