Introduction

• Wall beds were popularised in the USA where they
  were invented 120 years ago
• They enabled residents of apartments / Condos and
  houses of all sizes to make better use of space,
  by enabling a single, Queen or a King size bed
  to be hidden in the wall when not in use
• Since then, modern production techniques and
  materials have meant that there are far more
  solutions to this need, and costs have reduced
• The footprint of a wall bed when not in use is
  much less than 1m2 even for a queen size unit,
  meaning that much valuable space can be released,
  when a bed is used intermittently

• Trends indicate that smaller homes will demand
  increased flexibility of sleeping space, with
  multiple room use (playroom, home office, guest
  room, studio apartments) and this is of interest
  to developers, architects, designers, and not
  just the residential markets
• Hotels increasingly use wall beds to increase
  guest capacity in peak times of occupancy, which
  improves their occupancy ratios and eliminate
  storage of roll away beds which tend to be
  small and uncomfortable
• Developers increasingly install wall beds in new
  apartments to add value in at least one room,
  for minimal cost, integrating design with the
  style of the apartment, allowing finish options
  for the buyer for the storage unit, which range
  from melamine to veneered cabinets
