• Christopher Columbus was born in the Italian
  seaport of Genoa in 1451, to a family of wool
  weavers. As a child he helped his father at the
  loom and then as a young lad went to sea. He
  became an experienced sailor and moved to Lisbon
  in Portugal to try and gain support for a new
  journey he was planning. He visited the courts of
  the kings and queens of Europe asking for help
  and money. Finally Ferdinand and Isabella, the
  king and queen of Spain, agreed to support him.

In 1492, Columbus set off West across the
Atlantic Ocean in search of a new trade route to
the Far East, or Asia, the source of valuable
spices, silks, and luxuries. Columbus actually
landed on an island in the Bahamas called

• The First TripColumbus sailed for King
  Ferdinand II and Queen Isabella of Spain. On his
  first trip, Columbus led an expedition with three
  ships, the Niña (captained by Vincente Yanez
  Pinzon), the Pinta (owned and captained by Martin
  Alonzo Pinzon), and the Santa Maria (captained by
  Columbus), and about 90 crew members. They set
  sail on Aug. 3, 1492 from Palos, Spain, and on
  October 11, 1492, spotted the Caribbean islands
  off southeastern North America. They landed on an
  island they called Guanahani, but Columbus later
  renamed it San Salvador. They were met by the
  local Taino Indians, many of whom were captured
  by Columbus' men and later sold into slavery.
  Columbus thought he had made it to Asia, and
  called this area the Indies, and called its
  inhabitants Indians.

• The weather during the journey was pleasant, no
  major storms. By 10 October, after 34 days at
  sea, the sailors became hysterical and were ready
  to mutiny, many of them feeling that since the
  world was flat, at any moment they would fall
  off. Columbus convinced the mutineers to wait
  3 more days. They very next day they saw tree
  branches in the water and realized that land was
  close.
