  • Ore Characterisation
  • The accurate prediction of an ores downstream
processing performance is critical to resource
    evaluation and development decisions. Significant
cost and productivity benefits can be realised
through the early determination of an ores
    properties and processing potential.

4
  • Beneficiation
  • Alternative hematite/geothite ore sources such as
Marra Mamba and Channel Iron Deposits demand more
    effective beneficiation strategies that can
accommodate changing ore blends and remove gangue
components while minimising loss of iron units.
Magnetite ores also require beneficiation before
    further processing.

5
  • AgglomerationOur agglomeration research is
    proving instrumental in helping companies
throughout the world improve product quality and
    reduce environmental emissions. Together with
industry, we are optimizing existing practices
and conducting trials ranging from laboratory to
pilot-scale on new ores and ore blends.

6
contd
  • More specifically, this involves
  • Optimising of granulation
  • Analysing and predicting sintering properties of
    new ore types and blends
  • Determining optimum fineness of pellet feed ores
  • Optimising pelletising performance, including
    balling and induration
  • Developing alternative agglomeration processes
  • Assessing blast furnace performance
    characteristics of agglomerates
  • Developing strategies for minimising dust and
    gaseous emissions
  • Developing simulators (called Siro-Indur) for
    straight-grate and grate-kiln indurators
  • Investigating alternative fuels to reduce
    environmental emissions
  • Utilising alternative sources of iron units,
    including waste mater

7
  • Pilot-Scale Facilities
  • Our laboratories in the Queensland Centre for
Advanced Technologies (QCAT) offer a range of
world-class facilities for batch and continuous
pilotscale testing of iron ore processing
operations. Amongst these is our state-of-the-art
pilot-scale sinter rig. The sinter rig is well
    instrumented, featuring automatic data logging
via computer control and monitoring of gas and
particulate emissions, including CO, CO2, NOx and
    SOx.
