- Following is a picture tour of Ash Creek
Intermediate School in Monmouth, Oregon. - Ash Creek, which opened in September 2002, is a
high performance school.
2Exterior
- View of Ash Creek from the south. This photo
shows the exterior light shelves that shade the
lower windows and therefore reduce/eliminate
overheating in the classrooms.
3Entrance
- The entrance to Ash Creek faces east. The
clerestories for the hall can be easily seen in
this picture.
4Exterior View of the Gym
- The high windows provide daylighting in the gym.
5East Side of the Building
- This is the east side of the building. Light
shelves can block solar gains on sunny days, as
well as reflect more light into the classroom.
6Interior of the School
- Clerestories in the hallway provide lots of
natural daylighting with uniform light levels
within the hall. In addition, the hall feels very
light and airy. T5s are in the indirect light
fixtures (which are not on in the photo).
7North Hallway
- Clerestories in the north hallway provide lots
of natural daylighting. The white fabric (top
left side of photo) reflects light into the
classrooms through the interior windows. T5s are
in the indirect light fixtures (which are not
on in the photo).

- A low-profile hydronic radiator provides heat in
this entryway.
9Classroom Daylighting
This picture illustrates how the daylight is
bounced off the light shelve into the room.

comes into this classroom from the light tube,
the exterior side windows (seem reflected in the
TV), and the interior windows (the hall has
clerestories that bring in natural light).

- View is looking from within the classroom into
the hall. The daylighting from the hall provides
an inviting atmosphere. Besides the daylight from
the light shelves and the hallway, the light tube
(circle of light above clock) in the classroom
provides additional light. T5s are in the
indirect light fixtures.
13Low-Profile Heater
- A low-profile hydronic radiator (under the
window) provides heat in this classroom without
taking up space and without being an eyesore.
14Media Center
- The clerestory and the spun fiberglass skylight
provide lots of daylight in the media center.
15Cafeteria/Multi-Purpose Room
- Daylight from the hallway/clerestories passes
through the interior windows into the
cafeteria/multipurpose room.
16Gymnasium
- Clerestories provide daylighting in the gym.
17Gym Daylighting
- The daylighting provides uniform light levels
within the gym.
18Natural Ventilation
- The vents near the gym ceiling are used for
natural ventilation. The classrooms also have
natural ventilation with a mechanical system for
extreme conditions.
19Mechanical Room
- Three 97 percent efficient boilers provide the
heat for the entire school.
