Title: Setting student and class goals using baseline data

1
Setting student and class goals using baseline
data
  • North Grand High School
  • 10-23-09

2
Objectives
  • So, what am I really looking at? (for now)
  • Teachers will walk through a mini-lesson around
    Rit Goal Setting
  • Teachers will reflect on how data has informed
    their practice so far
  • Teachers will share examples of the work done in
    their classes around NWEA

3
What some of you said was going to happen
4
Heres a mock lesson on goal setting using NWEA
baseline data
  • The set up
  • Mr. Stroms 4th Period Language and Comp class
  • The lesson
  • In small groups students will be able to identify
and define the Goal/Standards being assessed on
    the NWEA interim Assessment
  • In small groups students will be able to assist
in creating a class Goal which they will target
    between now and December.

5
What was that test we took back in September?
  • Think-pair-share activity (5 min)
  • Why do you think we took that online test? (did
you take it, what did you think about it, how do
    you think you did, etc)
  • Goal for the teacher here is to get the students
think about how the test connects to This class?

6
What was on that test?
  • Think-pair-share (5 min)
  • What types of questions do you remember? What
was being assessed on that test that connects to
    this class?
  • Teacher Goal Get your students to think about
    some standards being assessed (vocabulary,
etc). Here is where Ive told students that in
This English class we need do better in Four
    main areas!

7
What are the Four Performance Areas in which we
need grow? (Reading)
  1. Word Analysis/Vocabulary
  2. Readings Strategies/Comprehension
  3. Literature
  4. Literary Works

What does this really mean Lopez?
8
Small Group Activity Directions
  • Directions In small groups (3-4) people you will
be given one of the four standards to define. Use
your brain power! (Some times Ive let students
    use dictionaries here) 10 Minutes
  • Identify the question your group is answering
  • Identify group roles
  • Who is the Note taker?
  • Who is the time-keeper? (10 Minutes)
  • Who is the Facilitator?
  • Who is the presenter?
  • In your group come up with a definition/answer
  • Post/Write your answer on the Large-post it
  • Be ready to present and teach to the class your
    definition/answer!

During the presentation other groups can
challenge the work being presented!
9
In your group answer the following question
  • Group 1s
  • What do you think Mr. Lopez means when he says we
have to get better at Word Analysis/Vocabulary
  • Group 2s
  • What do you think Mr. Lopez means when he says we
have to get better at Reading Strategies/Comprehe
    nsion
  • Group 3s
  • What do you think Mr.Lopez means when he says we
have to get better at Literature.
  • Group 4s
  • What do you think Mr. Lopez means when he says we
have to get better at Literary Works

10
Small Group Activity Two (After defining the
standardswhat did you miss?)
  • Directions Now that your group has, on its own,
defined the standard. Look and read the handout
provided by Mr. Lopez. This hand out gives you
the Assessment Definition of your term. (10
    Minutes!)
  • Everyone in the group should read the handout.
  • The group should analyze the handout and compare
    it to what they wrote.
  • What does your group think they missed?
  • The group records what they think they missed?
  • The group then writes in the large-post it what
they think they missed (according to the handout)
  • Students present their findings

11
Now that we are a little clearer on our
standards/goals (according to NWEA)
  • Making PredictionsIn your groups
  • Where do you think we are on a scale of 100-300?
    (In your goal area only)
  • Students will make a prediction with their group
then write it on the board
  • If you take all four goals and you average them
outwhat do you think our class average would be
    on a scale of 100-300?
  • Students will make a prediction then write it on
    the Rit AVG. Post it.
  • Then, lets look at what are scores currently are
    in this class

12
Our current scores are
  • Word Analysis/Vocabulary
  • Readings Strategies/Comprehension
  • Literature
  • Literary Works
  • Overall Class RIT AVG.
  • 217.1
  • 229.8
  • 224.3
  • 224.5
  • 224.9

13
Our Learning Destination
  • Now that we know where we arewhere do we want to
    be?
  • What is our lowest area? Should that be our
    target area?
  • As a class lets agree to target at least one
area of improvement between now and December. As
a class lets also agree to target an average RIT
    goal improvement.

14
Setting the class goal
  • By December our class Average Rit will be ?
  • By December our class word analysis score will be?

The idea here is that the teacher posts the class
goals and reminds the Students at least weekly of
their Learning Destination. In December during
the second round of assessment student can see if
theyve grown.
15
What did this teacher use to get this activity
done?
  • The Fall 2009 Teacher Report ONLY
