River
Catchment
The Georges River Catchment is 196km2 . It is
home to many different species of aquatic animals
as well as
Some of these species include
pelicans, crabs, prawns/shrimp, cormorants,
bream, blackfish, oysters, shags, plankton and
many others.
birds.
4Plankton is a tiny microscopic animal, and one
species of it looks like this
We watch the plankton and other species swim
around in less than a drop of water! There are
many species of plankton in the ocean. Plankton
is used for science testing. To collect
plankton, you need a very fine net, like this
The only way to view a plankton is under a
microscope, like these people are.
5Water Quality Testing
When we tested the water, we tested for
Temperature, Phosphates, Dissolved Oxygen,
Turbidity and acidity.
MEASURMENT READING H/M/L COMMENT
DISSOLVED OXYGEN (ppm) 4ppm LOW VERY GOOD
ACIDITY (pH) 7 MEDIUM PERFECT
PHOSPATES (ppm) 0/1ppm LOW GOOD, WATER ISNT VERY ACIDIC
TEMPERATURE (0) 16 MEDIUM GOOD TEMPERATURE
TURBIDITY (cm) 60cm HIGH BAD. WATER IS MUDDY
6Enviromental Issues
Item Likely Source Pollution Solution? Picture
1 Plastic Water bottles Shops Recycle when possible
2 Cigarette butts Smokers/ Shops Dont smoke Fine people for littering.
3 Plastic Bags Shops Make enviro-bags (green bags) cheaper charge people for plastic bags.
7Animal Investigation
There are many different species of animals in
the Georges River, and one of them is the Blue
Swimmer Crab. The diagram to the right includes
some of the features of the Blue Swimmer Crab.
Below is a simple food chain of the Georges River.
8Fish dissection
When we dissected a fish we either dissected a
bream (carnivore) or a blackfish (herbivore).
Herbivore fish eat sea grasses and other sea
plants. Carnivores eat other fish and molusces.
- When we cut open the fish, we started at the
anal hole and cut up to its teeth or its mouth.
We then cut down to the end of its tail, and
pulled the fish open. Some guts (organs) that we
found were - The stomach 6. The
bladder - The heart 7. The air
bladder - The kidneys 8. The
intestines - The egg sac 9.
The liver - Gills 10. The
lateral line
