Background
  • Program started in January 1999.
  • Result of a 51 million authorization for
    pharmaceutical and vaccine stockpiling in the
    fiscal year 1999 omnibus appropriation (P.L.
    105-277).
  • Known as the National Pharmaceutical Stockpile
    until renamed to Strategic National Stockpile in
    2003.

  • Initially based on providing countermeasures
    against the category A threat agents.
  • Grown to include radiological and chemical
    agents.
  • Now includes countermeasures for pandemic
    influenza.
  • Current inventory valued at 3.5 billion.

Delivering Materiel to States

    dispensing efforts.
