• 1933 600,000 Jews lived in Germany
• Jews held important positions in government and
  taught in German universities
• Of 38 Noble Prizes won by German writers and
  scientists between 1905 and 1936, 14 went to Jews
• Jewish people spoke German and considered it
  their home

• When Nazis gained power German Jews lives
  changed

Jewish Hatred Grows

• Because of incident with a Jewish teenager
  assassinating a German official violence broke
  out
• November 9, 1938 7,000 Jewish buisnesses were
  looted and trashed, 1,000 synagogues were burned
• Pogram became known as Kristallnacht or Night of
  Broken Glass.

• Morning after 30,000 Jewish men were arrested for
  being Jewish and sent to concentration camps
• Business were not allowed to be reopened unless
  run by a non-Jew
• Curfews were placed
• Children were expelled from public school

• Hitler favored emigration-allowing others to move
  out of the country
• France admitted 25,000
• Britain admitted 80,000
• Latin America admitted 40,000
• U.S admitted 100,000
• Many countries closed their doors

Ghettos

• Since Hitler could not get rid of the Jews he
  moved them to certain cities where he set up
  ghettos- segregated Jewish areas
• Hitler sealed these cities off where he hoped for
  people to die of starvation and disease
• People resisted and were able to smuggle in goods
  and continued to school their children
