Title: Alternative Energy

1
Alternative Energy
2
Renewable resources
  • Renewable means we can replace the resource in a
reasonable time, or the resource is not used up.

3
Non-renewable
  • Non-renewable once used, the resource cannot be
replaced. More is not being made as the
production takes millions of years or just the
    right conditions.

4
Renewable or Nonrenewable?
  • Oil Hydrogen uranium
  • Wind Solar Geothermal
  • Coal natural gas Hydroelectric
  • Biofuels Continue slide show

5
Oil
  • Oil is non-renewable as it takes millions of
years and just the right conditions to create.
  • Return to Quiz

6
Wind
  • Wind is renewable since it is not used up but is
always being generated by temperature differences
in ocean currents and on land.
  • Return to Quiz

7
Hydrogen
  • Hydrogen is renewable as we can make it from
    water.
  • Return to Quiz

8
Uranium
  • Uranium is not renewable since uranium is made
during the supernova stage of a star. We can
find uranium deposits from space and while we
have a lot, it is not renewable.
  • Return to Quiz

9
Solar
  • Solar is renewable.
  • Return to Quiz

10
Geothermal
  • Geothermal is renewable since the heat is
    provided by earths molten core.
  • Return to Quiz

11
Natural Gas
  • The vast stores of natural gas are not renewable
as they were made by fossil fuel deposits.
  • Return to Quiz

12
Coal
  • Coal, like oil, is formed from fossil fuel
    deposits.
  • It is not renewable.
  • Return to Quiz

13
Hydroelectric
  • Hydroelectric is renewable since snow in the
    mountains happens each year.
  • Return to Quiz

14
Biofuels
  • Biofuels are renewable since they are produced
from oils, sugars, or starches obtained from
    plants.
  • Methane, aka natural gas, is also being
collected from the decay of plants and other
organic material in places like landfills.
  • Return to Quiz

Alternative Energy Assignment
  • Part 1 - Make a chart showing 3 types of energy
    sources
  • Advantages
  • Disadvantages
  • Your opinion
  • You may work in pairs to brainstorm but Id
like each partner to create their own chart.

Alternative Energy Assignment
17
Alternative Energy Essay
  • Part two
  • Choose one alternative energy source that you
think is promising and explain in a 1-2 page
essay why you think it holds promise. You must
cite your resources, this includes information
you gather from class lectures. You must also
include new research other than that presented in
    class and cite your source.

18
Current Energy Use
19
Goals of alternative energy
  • 1. Provide alternatives to the limited supply of
    oil.
  • 2. Provide energy that does not increase the
    greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide.

24
Wind farms can also be offshore!
Wind is often stronger and more consistent out in
the ocean.
