General Information on CERT

What is CERT?
Community Emergency Response Team

• CERTs were conceptualized by the LAFD in 1985.
• In 1993, FEMA started to expand the concept, in
  order to train civilians nationwide.
• In 2002, CERT became part of the Citizen Corps.

CERT Organization

• CERTs are trained and organized by sponsoring
  agencies.

• Emergency Management Agencies
• Fire Departments

CERT Training

• CERTs are trained to prepare the individual, the
  family, and the community in the event of a large
  disaster.

CERT Training

• CERT Training classes last a total of 30 hours,
  and are free to the general public.

CERT Operation

• In the event of a disaster, CERT members are
  called upon to assist.
• CERTs report to the parent sponsoring agency, and
  are deployed to needed areas.
• Can provide First Aid, perform light Search and
  Rescue operations, and aid in assistance at
  shelters and checkpoints.

Conclusion

• CERT Training provides free safety and emergency
  preparedness training for individuals.
• Trained individuals can be relied upon as a team
  to aid their community in emergencies.
• Teams are located throughout the nation
