1
Franklin Roosevelts New Deal
  • The only thing we have to fear is Fear itself.

FDR Building Confidence
  • Needed to build trust with the people after the
    Hoover administration
  • Decided to use the Radio Fireside Chats
  • People now felt that the president worked for
    them

FDRs New Deal Programs
  • New Deal what he called his ideas to get the
    U.S. out of the Depression
  • New Deal Programs focused on one or more of the
    following
  • Fixing the banks
  • Creating more relief
  • Helping farmers
  • Reducing unemployment/creating jobs
  • Stabilizing the Stock Market

4
FDIC
  • Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
  • The Federal Government would now insure banks
  • If the bank failed, you would get any money that
you had in that bank back (up to 5,000).
  • The program is still in use today (now the
    insured limit is 250,000).

5
AAA
  • Agricultural Adjustment Act
  • Gave loans to farmers and controlled production
trying to fix the problem of oversupply
  • Paid farmers to grow less crops and raise less
animals and sometimes to plow over crops and
    destroy (kill) livestock

6
WPA
  • Works Projects (Progress) Administration
  • Federal government created new jobs with
    construction projects. Building or repairing
roads, bridges, dams, public buildings, etc.
  • Also, under the Federal Art Project, paid local
artists to produce works for public display

7
FMMA
  • Farm Mortgage Moratorium Act
  • Prevented banks from foreclosing on struggling
farms for 5 years. Gives farmers more time to
pay their debts, and lowered the interest they
    owed on the land.

8
FERA
  • Federal Emergency Relief Administration
  • The federal government gave money to states for
relief (most individual states ran out of relief
    money).

9
FHA
  • Federal Housing Administration
  • Creates stable bank loans to build more houses.
Because they are insured by the Federal
Government, it was easier for borrowers to get
loans, and many times at a lowered interest rate.

wages, work hours, and ended child labor.
  • Following the codes was voluntary, but those that
did could display a blue eagle and consumers were
encouraged to only buy from companies that
    displayed the blue eagle.

13
CCC
  • Civilian Conservation Corps
  • Labor camps for young men. Would work on
    conservation projects reforestation, fighting
    forest fires, digging ditches.
  • Was a large presence of CCC in Northern Minnesota

FLSA
  • Fair Labor Standards Act
  • Establish minimum working conditions (law)
  • Eliminate Child Labor
  • Set a minimum wage
  • Set a maximum number of hours for a work week

NLRA
  • National Labor Relations Act
  • Allowed workers to unite and collectively bargain
(join unions). These unions would be able to
argue with their employers for better working
    conditions.

16
N.D. Programs Did they work??
  • Mixed Results
  • Crop prices did rise for farmers, but the AAA was
    seen as wasteful by many
  • Unemployment was unchanged by the New Deal
    Programs
  • Banks were recovering and peoples faith in them
    was restored
  • Social Security did give people, especially the
    elderly, more money to survive
  • Programs like FDIC, FHA, SEC, SSA are still
    around today
  • Working rights and conditions set by FLSA, NLRA,
    NRA are still practiced today
