Economy
  • 18.88 billion economy - contributing almost 2
    to the national economy
  • 455,000 jobs key employment sectors include the
    Public Sector the Visitor Economy Financial and
    Business Services. Manufacturing employment has
    declined but not at the rate seen nationally and
    remains an important sector, not just in terms of
    jobs, but also output and businesses. Food and
    Drink Manufacturing in particular remains a
    strength in the LEP economy.

  • 48,500 businesses 70 of businesses are micro
    businesses. An average of 10 employees per
    business. Approx 15 of small businesses showed
    growth in 2007/08. Majority of businesses in the
    visitor economy and financial and business
    services sectors.
  • High business registration and survival rates
    500 new businesses per 10,000 residents each
    year, above average survival rates at 1 and 3
    years.
  • High levels of Self Employment 75,000 people
    self employed, the equivalent to 1 in 6 of all
    jobs. Self employment typically higher in the
    agriculture, construction and business services
    sectors.

People
  • High level of educational attainment and
    qualifications. Over a third of the working age
    population are qualified to Level 4 or above.
  • However 1 in 4 residents of working age have
    either low or no qualifications.
  • Generally high rates of economic activity and
    employment Low rates of unemployment (JSA
    claimant rate was 2.6 compared to 3.7
    nationally in May 2011)

  • Private sector Chairman
  • 8 private sector Board members, including
    entrepreneurs, small businesses, a multi-national
    corporation, a not for profit organisation and a
    university
  • 6 Leaders of Councils NYCC, CYC, ER, Ryedale,
    Craven and Scarborough

Interim Strategy
  • Emphasis is on DELIVERY need to show the
    business community and central Government that
    this LEP works
  • QUICK wins the LEP has 6 12 months to make a
    difference
  • TASK and FINISH Groups Private sector led and
    not just Board members
  • Focus on BUSINESS GROWTH job creation will be
    one outcome

Priorities
  • Task and Finish Groups will support -
  • The Agri-Food Sector - from Farm to Fork to
    grow the supply chain, addressing barriers to
    growth, e.g. a border inspection post for food?
    shelf life of food products?
  • The Visitor Economy - providing clarity around
    the supply chain
  • High Speed Broadband - providing support for
    rural NY to maximise broadband potential
  • Business Improvement - support for SMEs by
    developing a Certificate of Business
    Administration
  • Business Networks - to be the best and most
    effective
  • Coastal Regeneration the Enterprise Zone bid at
    Scarborough Business Park and
  • Skills and Training - provision focused on
    business needs.
