LTI no 16 24/April/2000 Burned with petrol
Two mechanics try to test an electric fuel pump
above a bowl filled with petrol .An electric
wire is used to make contact with the battery.

A spark ignites the petrol vapors and the petrol
catches fire. Burning petrol is spilled on the
coverall of the mechanic holding the pump and the
hands of the one holding the bowl.
SPARK !!!!

The mechanics roll themselves on the floor and
manage to put the fire out. Both are badly
burned. (1 LTI, 1 RWC)The photo shows the
coverall of one of the man. It is made from
nylon!!!

What caused this accident- Spark in a cloud of
petrol vapor- Mechanics not aware of the hazard
created by the combination of petrol vapors and
sparks from an electric circuit Discuss in
your team- How would you have tested the
fuel-pump? - Do you ever use petrol or other
volatile/flammable liquids?- How/where can
electric sparks be generated? - Are there
areas/conditions in your work where sparks can
be formed AND flammable vapors could be
present?- What would happen if both spark and
vapor come together?- How do you ensure they do
not come together?
