Ascaris lumbricoides It is a soil transmitted par
asite
19
Ascaris lumbricoides infected people with
associated morbidity 250 million,
20
Field studies demonstrate that 70 of the Ascaris
lumbricoides infestations occur in 15-30 of
the people.
21
Annual mortality 60,000 from complications as
ascaris migration , intestinal obstruction
malnutrition, anaemia and growth retardation as
well as higher susceptibility to other infections.
22
  • Infections are associated with
  • Poverty and poor living conditions
  • Inadequate sanitation and water
  • supplies
  • Soil quality and climate
  • Poor personal and environmental
  • hygiene Poor health awareness

23
Ascariasis. Large adult worms of Ascaris
lumbricoides.
24
Ascariasis. Section of lung showing very heavy
infection with larvae of A. lumbricoides.
25
Ascariasis. Higher magnification showing detail
of larva and surrounding inflammatory reaction.
26
Bolus of ascaris worms in the gut causing
intestinal obstruction.
27
Ascaris mature ova
28
Ascariasis. Unfertilized egg of A. lumbricoides
in faeces showing pronounced ellipsoidal
shape(Barrel) and indistinct internal structure.
29
This type of egg may be seen in patients
harbouring only female worms and they are
occasionally mistaken for vegetable cells.
30
Ascariasis. Fertilized egg of A. lumbricoides in
faeces showing more rounded shape and corticated
outer shell.
31
Ascariasis. Embryonated egg of A. lumbricoides
containing more mature embryo and showing less
pronounced cortication of outer shell.
32
Ascariasis. Barium study of small bowel in a
patient with ascariasis. The intestinal tract of
one of the adult worms is also well-outlined with
barium which it has ingested.
33
Barium study showing ascaris in the small
intestine.
34
Ascariasis. A single A. lumbricoides is visible
within the common bile duct.
35
Contrast material can also be seen in the
alimentary tract of the worm, which was
subsequently removed by sphincterotomy.
36
ERCP showing an ascaris worm in the common bile
duct of a young African patient presenting with
acute pancreatitis and cholangitis.
37
Ascaris female
(transverse section) 2 ovaries 2 uteri
38
Ascaris male T.S
39
Fertilized eggs where embryos have begun to
develop (this happens when the stool sample is
not processed for several days without
refrigeration). .
40
The embryos in early stage of division (4-6
cells) can be clearly seen.  Note that the egg on
the left has a very thin mammillated outer layer.
41
Egg containing a larva, which will be infective
if ingested With foods. This happens after 2
weeks in soil
42
Larva hatching from an egg in the dudenum
43
An adult Ascaris worm.  Tapered ends length 15
to 35 cm (the females tend to be the larger
ones).
44
This worm is a female, as evidenced by the size
and genital girdle (the dark circular groove at
bottom area of image)
45
Treatment
46
Four drugs are recommended for treatment
albendazole 400 mg single dose levamisole 2.5
mg/kg mebendazole 500 mg pyrantel 10 mg/kg
47
A single dose orally for treatment can be given
to pregnant and lactating women, but, as a
general rule, drugs should not be given in the
first trimester of pregnancy.
