Title: Stepping Outside My Technology Classroom Box

1
Stepping Outside My Technology Classroom Box
  • How one Teacher Spent His Summer Vacation

2
What is an RET Program?
  • Research Experience for Teachers
  • Funded by NSF (National Science Foundation)
  • Is hosted by a local university and professor
(i.e. Dr Stacy Klein at Vanderbilt University)
  • Is usually comprised of Research and Lesson
    Development Components

3
The RESEARCH
  • Work in Bioengineering Optics Lab with graduate
    student
  • Research a specific question
  • What is the effect of laser treatment on wound
    healing

Dr. Jerry Wilmink
4
The Equipment
Diode Laser ?
? Transgenic Mice
IVIS Imaging System ?

Peripheral Research
  • Design, development, and implementation of a beam
delivery system in order to facilitate human
clinical care with the Vanderbilt Free Electron
    Laser, including spectroscopic feedback
    controlled automated beam targeting systems
  • Transmyocardial Laser Revascularization (TMR).
  • Development of optical tools for use in cellular
    and molecular biology, including Optical
    Coherence Tomography (OCT) and bioluminescence
    imaging

The Grand Challenge
  • A mummified troll was discovered this past summer
at our school and it has generated lots of
interest worldwide. The principal asked us, the
technology classes, to design a security system
that will alert the police if someone tries to
pilfer our prized possession. How can we
construct a system that will allow visitors to
view our artifact during the day, but would
invisibly protect it at night in a cost-effective
    way?

9
The Cycle
  • Generate Ideas
  • Brainstorming (Individually then Class)
  • Multiple Perspectives
  • Use Experts (We used Mythbusters)
  • Research and Revise
  • Light Properties (We used Rainbow Symphonys
    Light and Color Tutorial)
  • Laser Research (Students Prepared a PowerPoint
    from Research)

10
Test Your Mettle
  • Create a Model of Security System Using
  • 12 pcs PVC pipe (8-18, 4-24)
  • 8 tri-joints
  • 8 snap-Ts
  • 8 street elbows
  • 8 compact mirrors
  • Tacking
  • Laser w/ light sensor alarm
  • 1 mini-troll

11
Go Public
  • Used 3 times during Module
  • 1st
  • Presented research findings from light tutorial
  • 2nd
  • Presented Powerpoints from laser research
  • 3rd
  • Demonstrated working laser system

12
Web Places of Interest
  • www.teachengineering.org (where this module is
    located)
  • www.iteaconnect.org (you should already be
    familiar with this one!)
  • www.tennessee-teea.org (our state organization
    with resources)

13
Thank You for Coming!
  • Enjoy the rest of YOUR Conference!!
