Title: PIBLS Online Seminar
1PIBLS Online Seminar
- This slideshow contains audio narration for each
- page. It may take a few minutes for the audio to
- load.
- If you do not hear the audio after a few minute,
try - clicking on the speaker icon at the bottom right
- corner of the presentation window to turn the
audio - on or off.
2Welcome to the PIBLS Online Seminar!
- We are going to show you what PIBLS is and how to
use it in the classroom to enhance your science
classes. - Partnership for Innovation in Biotechnology and
Life Sciences (PIBLS) has created virtual labs
and other resources from College and Graduate
courses for use by 7th 12th grades. - We will discuss ways of using the labs in the
classroom and as homework for your students
3What is PIBLS?
- Labs and simulations are available in General
Biology, Environmental Biology, Histology, and
Molecular Biology. They are now available online - There is an Image Gallery of Biology and
Histology images with hundreds of pictures - Other resources for teachers and counselors are
also available - All this is available both online and on a
transportable flash drive
4What Labs are available?
- 11 Virtual General Biology Labs
- Created by Dr. Kelly Mizell of San Jacinto
College for her Biology course - 10 Virtual Environmental Science labs
- Dr. Carl Zhang, of the University of Houston at
Clear Lake created these labs for his
Environmental Science course at UHCL. - 2 Virtual Histology Experiments and an
explanation of what Histology is. - Dr. Larry Rohde of the University of Houston at
Clear Lake created these experiments from labs
that his own students take in Histology. - 1 Virtual Molecular Biology simulation
- Dr. Larry Rohde uses this animation to teach his
Molecular Biology Students the basics - Image Gallery with Histology and Biology images
- Dr. Rohde created these images with a Nikon
microscope and a color mounted camera. His
graduate students enhanced the pictures with
labels
511 subjects are available for General
Biology Introduction - Lab Orientation and
Protocols Lab 1 - The Microscope Lab 2 - The
Cell Lab 3 - Punnett Squares Lab 4 -
Pedigrees Lab 5 - DNA Lab 6 - The Protists Lab 7
- Plant Organs and Organ Systems Lab 8 - Animal
Diversity Lab 9 - The Senses Lab 10 - Interaction
Between Different Species
6Examples of the animation in General Biology
7DNA Animations
8There is an animated Phylogenic Tree
9The animations explain the concepts
10The interactive activities help explain concepts
Animations and diagrams are available for every
subject
1110 Environmental Science Labs 10 Environmental Science Labs
Lab 1 - The Foundation of Environmental Biotechnology
Lab 2 - Composting
Lab 3 - How Sewage from Your Home is Treated
Lab 4 - Modern Sanitary Landfills
Lab 5 - Bacterial Detoxification of Hazardous Chemicals
Lab 6 - Phytoremediation
Lab 7 - Fungus Based Environmental Clean-up
Lab 8 - Plant Based Environmental Clean-up
Lab 9 - Liquid Chromatography
Lab 10 - Biomolecular Analysis
12Learn the fundamentals of Environmental
Biotechnology
13You can learn the facts about Composting with
clear animation
- Animations and interactive activities help
clarify the concepts - Every lab has a quiz at the end
14Reinforcing the Concepts
- Many animations and interactive activities help
reinforce the knowledge
15Learn about Landfills
- More interactive activities and quizzes will get
the students involved in learning.
16You can have the students go online and take
quizzes as practice
- Or give the quizzes to your students as homework.
- All the Environmental Science quizzes are
downloadable and available on the Teacher
Resource Page
172 Simulated Histology Experimentswith
interactive animations
- Histology
- What is Histology?
- Experiment 1 Tissue Fixation and Staining
- Experiment 2 Cell Culture Fixation and Staining
- Maximize window for best effect
18Interactive Experiments
- You click on the forceps to start the experiment
and start the timer in a realistic histology
experiment that college students would perform in
lab.
19Molecular Biology
Molecular Biology
DNA Sequencing
20Discover the genes that DNA represent!
- Using the General Biology Lab 5 as a base, this
simulation shows how a DNA sequencer reads the
DNA. - An example of a gel is shown
- The student can then read a real gel for practice
21The animation shows how DNA is loaded onto a
sequencing machine to be read
22Then, reading the gel gives students a key to the
NCBI Blast website so they can look up what genes
the DNA represents.

26Here teachers are helping teachers
- 2009 Science and Biology TEKs are available to
help you develop lesson plans - Many Lesson Plans using PIBLS were created by
other teachers and are available here - Environmental Science quizzes and General Biology
handouts that go with the labs are available to
download - Other resources on the web as well
- Such as links to The Inner Life of a Cell made
available online by Harvard University and
Siggraph Animation

28Podcasts were created by Space Center Houston and
Aerospace Academy
- Designed for middle school and high school
science teachers all over Texas for use in the
classroom in aerospace subjects. - 8 podcasts on 5 science subjects are included
- Human Physiology in Space Flight
- Biotech Careers
- Bioreactors
- Space Geography
- Newtons Laws of Motion
- Now available on the PIBLS website only (not
available on the flash-drive).
29- Why do I need to study this science stuff?
- If you ever get that question heres the answer
The Career Guide!
30- Details of current jobs that are available for
Aerospace and related industries - What schools offer the degrees in these subjects?
- How much they can make once they get a job?
- All this, and games for students to play that
will help them retain the information.

33Contacts for PIBLS and Evaluations
- Evaluations by other teachers and students are
available on the Evaluations page - Contact information for all the creators of PIBLS
available on the Contact PIBLS page. - If you have any questions, you can contact me at
jon.willard_at_sjcd.edu
34Whats next?
- PIBLS was a pilot program. Now we want to extend
the subjects to include labs in all the STEM
subjects. - Science and Math Advancing Research and Teaching
(SMART) NSF(MSP) grant is being written currently
to continue the PIBLS pilot program. - Join the Teacher Advisory Committee
- Choose the subjects we will create labs for next
- Help develop the content of the labs
- Make the labs more useful to teachers and
students - Contact jon.willard_at_sjcd.edu to be a part of
this dynamic program
35Homework
- The homework for this seminar is to create 2
lesson plans using PIBLS and send them to
jon.willard_at_sjcd.edu . Upon receipt of these
lesson plans 50.00 (in addition to the
participation scholarship of 50.00) will be sent
to you along with a certificate of completion (3
CEU hours). Deadline for this is December 15,
2009. (After that the grant will end, although I
will still be around to answer your emails.)
