BMI
  • Body mass index (BMI) is measure of body fat
based on height and weight that applies to both
    adult men and women.
  • BMI is a reliable indicator of total body fat,
which is related to the risk of disease and
    death.
  • The score is valid for both men and women but it
does have some limits. The limits are
  • It may overestimate body fat in athletes and
others who have a muscular build.
  • It may underestimate body fat in older persons
and others who have lost muscle mass.

OBESITY
  • Obesity is an excess of body fat frequently
resulting in a significant impairment of health.
Obesity results when the size or number of fat
    cells in a person's body increases. A
normal-sized person has between 30 and 35 billion
fat cells. When a person gains weight, these fat
cells first increase in size and later in number.
One pound of body fat represent about 3500
    calories.

CONSEQUENCES
  • There are harrowing social consequences to
obesity.  There is discrimination in all areas of
life.  People are perceived as lazy, gluttonous,
weak and having no self control. It has been said
that obesity is the last socially acceptable form
of prejudice. Even airlines are trying to charge
    more to obese customers.
