Title: ISLAM: From God or Man?

1
ISLAMFrom God or Man?
2
Since September 11, 2001, we have been inundated
with information regarding Islam or those who
hold the Muslim faith. So exactly what does this
religion teach? How does it compare to New
Testament Christianity? What does jihad really
entail? And how does this religion treat women?
While many would say that there is not that
much difference between Islam and Christianity,
that is simply not so. During this class we
will consider contrasts between the following
gt The Bible vs. The Qurangt Jesus vs.
Muhammadgt Evangelism vs. Jihadgt God vs. Allahgt
The Cross vs. The Crescent

What comes to your mind when you hear the word
Islam or Muslim?
4
Confusion?
5
  • - On our own soil, Americans experienced the
    worst terrorist attack in history.
  • And we saw videos of some Islamic people
dancing for joy in the streets.

6
  • But we also saw a TV interview with a young
Muslim woman saying I want to take my religion
back from people who preach hatred. My religion
    is not about hatred.

7
  • Many have proclaimed that true Islam is a
    peaceful religion.
  • Even President Bush in 2001
  • We are encouraged to embrace our differences and
    promote unity.
  • Anyone even questioning the construction of a
mosque in his or her own neighborhood is
    chastised as intolerant or hateful.
  • After all, we are told that all of the bombings
and killings are the acts of terrorist
    extremistsnot true Muslims.

  • It is confusing for us when we hear different
    signals
  • What is Islam?
  • - Is it what the Muslim clerics in the US
    are saying?
  • - Is it what the Muslim clerics in
    Afghanistan say?

22
  • As Christians, it does not matter which version
    regarding Islam is true...

23
  • Christ ascended back into Heaven, He said to His
apostles, All authority has been given to Me in
Heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that
I have commanded you and lo, I am with you
always, even to the end of the age (Matthew
    2818-20).
  • This commission began with the Apostles and is
    extended to include all Christians
  • And the things that you have heard from me among
many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who
will be able to teach others also (2 Timothy
    22).

24
  • Christians today should desire to see all people
saved, including those who are Muslims, for the
invitation of our Lord is a universal appeal.
  • This is demonstrated by the apostle Peter at the
house of Cornelius when he said, In truth I
perceive that God shows no partiality. But in
every nation whoever fears Him and works
righteousness is accepted by Him (Acts
    1034-35).

25
  • Some will ask, What about the dangers Christians
    face from Islamists?

26
  • When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield
strike off their heads and, when you have laid
them low, bind your captives firmly. Then grant
them their freedom or take ransom from them,
until war shall lay down her burdens (Quran
    474)
  • There is no nation but We shall destroy or
sternly punish before the Day of Resurrection.
This is decreed in the Eternal Book (Quran
    1758)
  • As for those who are slain in the cause of God,
He will not allow their works to perish. He will
vouchsafe them guidance and ennoble their state
He will admit them to the Paradise He has made
    known to them (Quran 476)

27
  • Sura 839 - Jihad is fighting anybody who stands
in the way of spreading Islam. Or fighting anyone
who refuses to enter into Islam.
  • Some of us are Muslims and some are wrongdoers.
Those that embrace Islam pursue the right path,
but those that do wrong shall become the fuel of
    Hell (Quran 7217)

28
  • What do the scriptures teach?
  • Stephen - this servant of Christ also proclaimed
the gospel and debated with the Jews in their
    synagogues (Acts 78-9). His forcefulness
demonstrates that Christianity is not passive it
engages the opposition. It also, however,
frequently arouses opposition, and such was the
case in this instance. The leaders of the
Sanhedrin, as well as the people generally, were
aroused to a state of frenzy. They rushed upon
the man of God and brought him before the
assembled council. The infuriated mob rushed him,
dragged him from the city, and stoned him. This
was no legal execution. It was a lynching!
  • Peter John 2117-19 - He saith unto him the
third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him,
Lord, thou knowest all things thou knowest that
I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast
young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst
whither thou wouldest but when thou shalt be
old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and
another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither
thou wouldest not. Now this he spake, signifying
by what manner of death he should glorify God.

29
  • What do the scriptures teach?
  • Revelation 210 - Fear not the things which thou
art about to suffer behold, the devil is about
to cast some of you into prison, that ye may be
tried and ye shall have tribulation ten days. Be
thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee
    the crown of life.
  • In all reference in the New Testament to the
crown of the Christian, it is the stephanos, the
crown of victory. Christ is saying, be faithful
unto the point of death, and even if you die, you
will be the victor. This is a promise of heaven.

The Islamic Invasion
  • Most Muslim countries have either closed the
    borders to missionaries
  • or have made evangelism illegal,
  • or both

34
The Islamic Invasion
  • Islam is not only the dominant religion in North
    Africa,
  • - Began in Saudi Arabia
  • - But now non-Arab Muslims outnumber Arab
    Muslims
  • (31)
  • - The 4 nations w/ largest number of Muslims
    today are
  • outside the Middle East
  • Indonesia 150 million about
    the total in the
    Middle East
  • Pakistan
  • Bangladesh
  • India 100 million

35
The Islamic Invasion
  • Africa 307 million Muslims
  • Asia 778 million Muslims

36
The Islamic Invasion
  • Due to the liberal immigration policies, millions
of Muslims have now emigrated to the West in
    search of a better life.
  • In many Western European nations, Islam has
become the second-largest religion (32 million)
  • - France - 5 million Muslims
  • - Germany 3 million Muslims
  • As they increase in number their
    political strength is asserted.
  • In Germany, resident aliens are demanding
    voters rights.

37
The Islamic Invasion
  • Spain
  • - Home of Europe's first Islamic guerrilla
    army
  • - Many of Spain's mosques are financed with
Saudi funds which tend to promote the more
    radical Wahhabi form of Islam.
  • - 90 of Spain's 600,000 Muslims are from
    Morocco
  • Many of Spain's Muslims long for an Islamic
revival to reclaim their legendary history

A key flash point is the Cordoba Cathedral
Which originally was a mosque
38
The Islamic Invasion
  • England
  • 2nd largest religious group
  • London alone has over a 1000 mosques
  • Muslims are buying Anglican church
buildings and turning them into mosques at such a
rate that some Muslims claim that
  • England will be the Europes 1st Muslim country!
  • The British Mosque Council claims to have 2
    million voters
  • their rallying cry is
  • Muslims first and Britons second
  • Parliament has ruled that Muslims do not have to
follow English Common Law when it comes to things
such as divorce (they can follow Islamic law
    instead)

39
The Islamic Invasion
  • Canada
  • gt Time Canada (the leading news magazine in
    Canada)
  • Muslims are growing in numbers and political
    clout
  • Toronto has the highest concentration of
Muslims in any city in the US
    or Canada
  • gt Ottawa Citizen (the leading newspaper in
    Canadas capitol
    city)
  • Canadas Muslims should be allowed to
    use Shariah law
  • gt Canadian Muslims are celebrating progress -
  • The election of a Muslim to the Canadian
    parliament
  • The province of Ontario has authorized the use of
    sharia law in civil arbitrations

40
The Islamic Invasion
  • Australia
  • gt Muslim population is growing at 40 over five
    year period
  • gtmore than one-third of Australian Muslims
    are born in Australia.
  • gt Australia's Muslim community, drawn from
more than 70 different countries, is a
well-established and integral part of Australia's
    broader society.
  • Nov. 06, 2005 An inflammatory pamphlet
urging Muslims to oppose Western governments was
handed out at a major Islamic festival in
    Melbourne yesterday.

41
Recent Muslim claim
Today, Islam is the 3rd largest religious group
in America. Only the Catholics and Baptists are
larger.
Source U.S. Almanac
Muslims
gt Fastest growing religion in the U.S. gt
Expected to double by 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!
42
  • Texas ranks Fifth in number of Muslims.
  • Texas has 100,000 registered Muslim voters
  • The American Muslim Council states American
Muslims have arrived as a political force

43
Collin County
  • Islamic Association of Collin County
  • 7,500 Muslims are members
  • Last April, Ali Samana contested for a City
Council seat in the city of Frisco, Texas.
  • On a Frisco web site (Posted on 12/04/2005)
  • Islamic web designers compete for chance to
fire missiles at American troops by remote
    control

44
Where is all this growth coming from?
  • Asia Africa --- Growing primarily thru
    population
    growth (births)
  • According to the United Nations, the global
birthrate will soon be 50 Muslim
  • Western Europe Growing primarily thru
    immigration
  • Canada Growing primarily thru immigration

45
Where is all this growth coming from?
  • US -- While part of the rise in the population of
Muslims in the United States is due to
immigration, the phenomenal growth of Islam in
the past 10 years has come from an increasing
    number of
  • Americans converting to Islam.

46
Where is all this growth coming from?
  • US conversions to Islam.
  • - Islam continues to draw followers at an
estimated rate of 135,000 converts per year.
  • - 30 of American Muslims are converts to the
    faith.
  • Per Christianity Today, in Cleveland 95 of
    the Muslims are converts
  • Half of the number American converts to
Islam come from the African-American community.
    (many in prison 35,000/yr)
  • Islam groups are now highly visible on American
    campuses
  • - practice strong proselytizing
    techniques
  • US Muslim converts include professors,
    journalists, politicians, actors, and athletes.
  • Who do YOU think make up 2?

47
  • American women make up the second largest group
    of converts to Islam.
  • Men are the maintainers of women because Allah
has made some of them to excel others and because
they spend out of their property the good women
are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as
Allah has guarded and (as to) those on whose
part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave
them alone in their sleeping places and beat
them then if they obey you, do not seek a way
against them surely Allah is High, Great.
    (Quran, 434)

48
We want answers ---
  • What motivated people to do such horrendous
    things?
  • What is jihad?
  • Do all Muslims believe the same thing?
  • What do the millions of Muslims living in the
    U.S. believe?
  • Is Islam simply a different religion?
  • Is Allah the same as your God?
  • What do you tell your children?
  • And as Christians, we must come to comprehend our
attitudes and actions in regard to the Muslim
    people.

49
Why Is Islam Growing So Rapidly?
  • Dr. Evertt Huffard
  • the recognized expert within the church on
    Islam
  • - His mission experiences began as a
teenager when his parents moved to
    Jerusalem, Jordan.
  • - Dr. Huffard lived in Nazareth for
eight years and is a specialist in
    evangelism and Islam.
  • - Formerly professor of missionlogy
    at Harding University
  • - Currently Dean, Harding University
    Graduate School of
    Religion - Widely sought-after
    lectureship speaker

50
Why Is Islam Growing So Rapidly?
  • Dr. Evertt Huffard suggests some factors
  • 1 It fills a moral and political vacuum
  • gt Corruption is rampant in many areas where
    Islam flourishes
  • 2 ISLAM claims a universal allegiance to an
    almighty GOD
  • gt It is a contrast to the idolatry of Arabia
and the icons of the Eastern church.
  • gt The God of Islam is preeminently a God of
    power.
  • 3 IT OFFERS A SIMPLE RELIGION.
  • gt The traditions of Judaism and the Eastern
Orthodox church had become complex and
    cumbersome.
  • gt Islam asked only that its adherents accept
    the 5 Pillars.
  • gt It promotes a firm monotheism and a strict
    moral code.
  • 4 THERE ARE CULTURAL AND FINANCIAL BENEFITS TO
    ISLAM.

51
WHY IS THERE A RESURGENCE OF ISLAMIC
FUNDAMENTALISM TODAY?
  • 1. Islam has always been an aggressive religion.
  • 2. The clash between modern nationalism (many of
the Middle Eastern nation states are less than 60
    years old) and tribal loyalties.
  • gt Iraqi Tribes Are Key Source of Loyalty,
    Rebellion - THE WALL STREET
    JOURNAL

52
WHY IS THERE A RESURGENCE OF ISLAMIC
FUNDAMENTALISM TODAY?
  • 3. The establishment of the modern nation of
    Israel.
  • 4. The moral weakness of an increasingly
    secularized Western culture.
  • 5. An increase in Arabic emigration to western
    Europe and America.
  • 6. OIL! (money, money, money)

53
DID YOU KNOW?
  • Muslims have targeted the United States with an
    aggressive missionary program.
  • gt Saudi Arabia is spending 50 million in
    the USA to promote
    Islam.
  • For example, the Saudis have given millions
    of dollars to
  • Harvard University
  • University of Arkansas
  • University of California
  • University of Texas
  • to fund Islamic study centers.

54
Muslims in the US
  • 71 are active at their mosque
  • They are affluent, politically knowledgeable,
    religious, and activist.
  • 58 of this countrys Muslims are college
graduates (compared with the national percentage
    of 25).
  • A majority of Muslims believe that Muslims should
    participate in the political process.
  • School boards currently are their most
    concentrated thrust

55
Islam
  • A major world religion distinctly different from
    Christianity.
  • Mosques are springing up in many areas
  • (including Richardson and Plano)
  • YOU probably live near, work with, oryour
children go to school with Muslims.

56
What is Islam all about?
  • People in the US have a hard time understanding
    Muslims
  • Many think they are all just crazy?
  • -- These people are not lunatics!!
  • No, they are following a philosophy a
religious philosophy and once we understand
this philosophy, none of their actions will
    surprise us.

57
What is Islam all about?
  • Muslims take offense at any criticism of their
    religious beliefs.
  • - They find it very difficult to
understand that freedom of religion in the U.S.
means that people are free to criticize Islam (as
    well as other religions)!
  • - In their Islamic home lands any
criticism of Islam (or the Quran) is a criminal
    offense punishable by death.
  • Muslims are discouraged from asking
    questions about their own faith.
  • Sura 5101-102 - "O ye who believe! Ask not
questions about things which if made plain to
you, may cause you trouble. Some people before
you did ask such questions, and on that account
    lost their faith."

58
  • Islam the name of the religion which came out
    of the teachings of Muhammad
  • - means submission
  • Muslim- one who adheres to the religion of
    Islam
  • - means one who submits to
    Allah
  • Now, the question you must answer when submitting
    to Allah is
  • What does Allah want?
  • The answer is found in the holy books of Islam

59
the holy books of Islam
  • The Quran (Koran)
  • Islamic Bible
  • - collection of revelations
    supposedly given by Allah to
    Muhammad
  • (through the angel
    Gabriel) and preserved as the
    Islamic scripture.
  • - Absolute,
    infallible, and eternal to
  • Muslims
  • Note It is significant that the revelations
did not all come at the same time

60
the holy books of Islam
  • The hadith
  • - a set of books that are a record of the
    things Muhammad said and did
  • - Note The hadith is a point of division
    in the Muslim world
  • The Sunni Muslims accept it all
  • The Shiite Muslims accept most
  • (they reject those recorded by Muhammads second
    wife)
  • Note The hadith is significant because it
establishes principles of activity that can be
    (are) practiced today

61
Islamic Law
  • The Sharia
  • - All aspects of a Muslim's life are governed
by Sharia. Sharia law comes from a combination of
sources including the Qur'an (the Muslim holy
book), the Hadith (sayings and conduct of the
prophet Muhammad) and fatwas (the rulings of
    Islamic scholars).

62
Islamic Law
  • The Sharia
  • Sharia Law is a serious threat being posed to
this country. During a recent public terrorist
financing trial in Dallas, a chilling collection
of previously classified evidence was entered
which laid out the Islamist agenda to take over
    the United States.
  • The evidence contained a memo from the Muslim
Brotherhood (parent organization of Hamas the
Palestinian extremist group) laying out steps for
how the U.S. Constitution could be destroyed from
within and replaced with Sharia Law.
  • The plan is aimed at creating a view that
Muslims are victims and hence criticism of
Islam becomes a topic to be avoided. It plays on
    Americans distaste for racism.
  • They even have a powerful P.R. and lobbying firm
at work. It is called C.A.I.R.
  • Let there be no doubt that the Council on
    American-Islamic Relations is a terrorist
supporting front organization that is partially
funded by terrorists, and that C.A.I.R. wishes
nothing more than the implementation of Sharia
    Law in America.

63
  • So, what does the Quran and the hadith tell us
    that Allah wants?
  • - There are 5 key requirements that must be met
in order to be a Muslim --
  • the five pillars of Islam

64
The 5 pillars of faith
  • 1. The Shahada
  • "There is none worthy of worship except
God and Muhammad is the messenger of
God." This declaration of faith is called
the Shahadah, a simple formula that
    all the faithful pronounce.
  • The significance of this declaration is
the belief that the only purpose of life
is to serve and obey God, and this is achieved
through the teachings and practices of the
    Last Prophet, Muhammad.
  • Saying Shahada w/ sincerity is all it
    takes to become a Muslim
  • These few words probably have more power
over the Muslim than any creed that has
    been written
  • These words are heard not only in the
    mosques but in the streets
  • They are the rallying cry in times of
war as well as part of the funeral
    dirge
  • The chanting of these words gives
    strength to the Muslim
  • Not in the Quran (the 2 ideas appear
    separately)

65
The 5 pillars of faith
  • 2. Daily prayers while facing Mecca
    (5 times daily)
  • Salah is the name for the obligatory prayers that
are performed five times a day, and are a direct
link between the worshipper and God. There is no
hierarchical authority in Islam and there are no
priests. Prayers are led by a learned person who
knows the Qur'an and is generally chosen by the
    congregation.
  • Prayers are said at dawn, mid-day,
late-afternoon, sunset and nightfall, and thus
determine the rhythm of the entire day.
  • Sura 2458 on three occasions
    morningnoonday.late-night prayer
  • They must wash in prescribed manner before prayer
  • Gather at mosque at noon Friday
  • Muslims must recite prescribed prayers
  • Each prayer begins with a recitation of the
    opening chapter from the Quran.
  • Matt 67 - And in praying use not vain
repetitions, as the Gentiles do for they think
that they shall be heard for their much speaking.

66
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the
Compassionate Praise belongs to God, the Lord of
all Being, the All-merciful, the
All-compassionate, the Master of the Day of
Doom. Thee only we serve to Thee alone we pray
for succour. Guide us in the straight path, the
path of those whom Thou hast blessed, not of
those against whom Thou art wrathful, nor of
those who are astray.
67
These five prescribed prayers contain verses from
the Qur'an, and are said in Arabic. Personal
supplications, however, can be offered in one's
own language and at any time. Although it is
preferable to worship together in a mosque, a
Muslim may pray almost anywhere, such as in
fields, offices, factories and universities. A
translation of the Adan or Call to Prayer is
God is Great. God is Great. God is Great. God
is Great. I testify that there is none worthy of
worship except God. I testify that there is none
worthy of worship except God. I testify that
Muhammad is the messenger of God. I testify that
Muhammad is the messenger of God. Come to
prayer! Come to prayer! Come to success! Come
to success! God is Great! God is Great! There
is none worthy of worship except God.
68
The 5 pillars of faith
  • 3. Charitable giving - (2.5)
  • An important principle of Islam is that
everything belongs to Allah, and that wealth is
therefore held by human beings in trust. The word
zakah means both "purification" and "growth." Our
possessions are purified by setting aside a
proportion for those in need and for the society
in general. Like the pruning of plants, this
cutting back balances and encourages new growth.
  • Each Muslim calculates his or her own zakah
individually. This involves the annual payment of
a fortieth of one's capital, excluding such items
as primary residence, car and professional tools.
  • An individual may also give as much as he or she
pleases as sadaqa-h, and does so preferably in
secret. Although this word can be translated as
"voluntary charity" it has a wider meaning.
  • In general, the recipients of such benevolence
feel no gratitude towards the giver. They believe

  • 4. Pilgrimage to Mecca
  • The pilgrimage to Makkah (the hajj) is an
obligation only for those who are physically and
financially able to do so. Nevertheless, over two
million people go to Makkah each year from every
corner of the globe providing a unique
opportunity for those of different nations to
    meet one another.
  • The annual hajj begins in the twelfth month of
the Islamic year (which is lunar, not solar, so
that hajj and Ramada-n fall sometimes in summer,
sometimes in winter). Pilgrims wear special
clothes simple garments that strip away
distinctions of class and culture, so that all
    stand equal before God.
  • The rites of the hajj include going around the
Ka'bah seven times, and going seven times between
the hills of Safa and Marwa. The pilgrims later
stand together on the wide plains of 'Arafat (a
large expanse of desert outside Makkah) and join
in prayer for God's forgiveness, in what is often
thought as a preview of the Day of Judgment.
  • The close of the hajj is marked by a festival,
the 'Id al Adha, which is celebrated with prayers
and the exchange of gifts in Muslim communities
everywhere. This and the 'Id al Fitr, a festive
day celebrating the end of Ramada-n, are the two
    holidays of the Islamic calendar.

72
  • 5. Fasting in the daylight hours during Ramadan,
the month the Quran came down.
  • Every year in the month of Ramada-n, all Muslims
fast from dawn until sundown--abstaining from
food, drink, and sexual relations with their
    spouses.
  • Those who are sick, elderly, or on a journey, and
women who are menstruating, pregnant or nursing,
are permitted to break the fast and make up an
equal number of days later in the year if they
are healthy and able. Children begin to fast (and
to observe prayers) from puberty, although many
    start earlier.
  • Although fasting is beneficial to health, it is
mainly a method of self-purification and
self-restraint. By cutting oneself from worldly
comforts, even for a short time, a fasting person
focuses on his or her purpose in life by
constantly being aware of the presence of Allah.
  • Allah states in the Qur'an "O you who believe!
Fasting is prescribed for you as it was
prescribed to those before you that you may learn
    self-restraint." (Qur'an 2183)

  • WHY is it so important that Muslims DO
  • what Allah wants?
  • Its because Islam is a religion of works
  • - Entrance to Paradise must be earned!
  • Sura 1016-9 Then as for him whose measure of
good deeds is heavy, he shall have a pleasant
life (in Paradise). But as for him whose measure
(of good deeds) is light, his abode shall be the
    abyss (pit hell).

74
  • There is no guarantee of Paradise - it all
depends on how Allah decides your balance
  • BUT there is one way to guarantee entrance to
    Paradise
  • Sura 474 Let those fight in the way of Allah,
who sell this worlds life for the hereafter and
whoever fights in the way of Allah, then be he
slain or be he victorious, We shall grant him a
    mighty reward.
  • The only way to know for sure that you will get
into Paradise is to die in jihad to die while
    fighting the enemy of Islam.

75
  • So, you can see the relative ease a fanatic could
    recruit even suicide bombers.
  • Do all Muslims really believe this?
  • To answer this, we must recognize that there are
    different kinds of Muslims.

76

  • - They take on the cultural trappings
  • - The majority of Muslims in both the West
and the East fall into this category
  • The traditional Muslim
  • - They study and practice Islam
  • - But they have a stumbling block with the
    concept of jihad

    battle
