  • Be calm and reassuring
  • Move to quiet, well ventilated area
  • Find out what substances taken
  • Manage anxiety or panic
  • Encourage casualty to drink water

  • Rest and drink water one glass an hour
  • Call an ambulance if the casualty
  • Collapses, faints or has a fit
  • Becomes drowsy, confused
  • Vomits uncontrollably
  • Skin colour blue or pale

Fever - Measuring
  • Fever above 38.0ºC
  • Digital thermometer
  • Place plastic sleeve over probe tip
  • Place in mouth or armpit (0.5ºC lower)
  • Leave until beeping signal heard
  • Record the temperature
  • Wipe thermometer alcohol swipe

Fever Management
  • Above 40ºC, manage as heat stroke
  • Rest in comfortable position
  • Paracetamol (if no contraindications)
  • Give casualty water 1 cup per hour
  • Sponge exposed skin
  • Monitor child for febrile convulsions
  • Take temperature every 15 minutes

Fever - Discharge
  • Rest
  • Keep drinking fluids
  • Seek medical advice if condition continues or
    worsens
