3Visual Inspection
- Refer to Iomega Work Instruction D03262800,
INSPECTION OF PLASTIC SURFACES OF REMANUFACTURED
ASSEMBLIES. - Visual inspection should include the following
- The drive case is not fully seated, is
misaligned, or has physical damage. - Control buttons are seated and appear to work
properly - The rear connector pins are bent, missing, or
sunken, or the connector housing is damaged. - There are loose parts or foreign material inside
the drive. Turn the drive over and listen for
loose parts tumbling inside. - There are extra stickers or labels on the drive
case. - There is corrosion, fingerprints, marks or
contamination on the drive case. - The serial number label is missing, damaged, or
illegible. - The printing on the logo is illegible or
incomplete. - The functional test should only be administered
to drives that pass VMI. - Customers will occasionally remove the hard disk
drive and other electronics from the outer case.
If the drive has no connectors, doesnt weigh
very much or has otherwise been altered, the
drive should be failed (Failure Code FRAUD). - Once the unit is powered up, make sure to check
for the following - Listen for properly operating fans
- Listen for obviously failed hard drive noise
(grinding, buzzing, beeping) - All L.E.D. lights are functioning to show drive
activity. - The L.C.D. screen is functioning properly
4NAS DEPP
- The iX12-300r process uses a version of DEPP
designed to image network hard drives. This
version of DEPP is known as NAS DEPP. - For the iX12, NAS DEPP (SOHO DEEP) is initiated
by interrupting the boot process and initiating
the rebuild command - NAS DEPP has 3 major components.
- .csv file Contains all of the definitions for
the drive images - Image files The actual image to be written to
each HDD - The NAS executable program
- Like the other version of DEPP, the folder is
portable with no installation required. All of
the components needed to run the program are
contained in the NAS DEPP folder - The version of NAS DEPP used for reverse
logistics screening and refurbishment is exactly
the same as the one used in drive
production/rework.
5Drive Readiness
- Remove the hard drives from the unit by releasing
the lever and pulling on the sled handle - Using a USB interface card connect the drive to
the PC and allow it to be detected - Open Disk Management and delete all of the drive
partitions - Right click on the unallocated partition and
create a new partition using the new partition
wizard - The drive only needs to be short formatted.
- When the new partition is built and healthy,
run chkdsk to ensure that there are 0KB in bad
sectors and no problems with the hard drive. - Every drive processed needs to have all of the
previous customer information removed. - The Iomega Security Erase Utility (ISEUtil.exe)
is used to completely overwrite all data from the
previous customer. Refer to the Iomega Security
Erase training module for details. - Once all of the drives have been prepared to
receive a new image they are ready to be
re-inserted in to the iX12 enclosure.
6Drive Imaging NAS DEPP
- Re-install the hard drives in to the iX12 case
- Attach power cables and the network cable in port
1. - Attach a DB9 Null Modem cable (female - female)
into the rear of the unit and to the NAS DEPP
computer's serial port.
- Attach a USB keyboard. The keyboard can be
attached in the front USB port if it is more
convenient as there is no USB flash drive
(imager) required for this process. - Attach the iX12 to the test network.
7Drive Imaging NAS DEPP
- Start the NAS DEPP Program
- The Terra Term software is used to communicate
with the iX12 and monitor the boot process. - Start Tera Term and configure the COM1 settings
per the information below.
8Drive Imaging iX12
- With Tera Term running, turn the ix12 unit on.
- Watch the boot process for the ix12 in the
communications window. - Watch for the message shown below. This will
appear in about 1 minute or slightly longer. - Press the lt ESC gt key when you see 'GRUB loading,
please wait...'.
9Drive Imaging iX12
- The screen below will appear after pressing
ltESCgt. - Select SOHODEEP and press ltENTERgt.
10Drive Imaging iX12
- The information below will be displayed.
- The ix12 unit will now send the request to the
NAS DEPP server. - The NAS DEPP server must have the latest version
of images for this rework. - A client window will be opened by NAS DEPP and
the unit will be downloaded with the images
required. - The unit will follow the normal NAS DEPP process.
11Drive Imaging NAS DEPP
- When NAS DEPP has finished successfully the green
screen will appear. - Use the power button on the front of the unit to
power the iX4 down.
12Drive Rebuild Verification
- After the rebuild of the drive, ensure that the
image has been properly installed. Power the
drive back on and allow it to boot. - Access the rebuilt drive using the StorCenter
Manager tool or a browser and the IP address. - Step through the set-up screens and ensure that
the public and backups folders have been created
in My Computer. - Using My Computer drag a file to the mapped drive
(public) to ensure that files can be copied to
the drive. Delete the file that was copied to the
unit. - In the management console view the dashboard to
determine system status. - Click on the hardware status option and ensure
that all of the parameters are green. - Under the Settings tab choose the disks icon
and make sure that all of the disks are shown as
operating (green) and that the full capacity of
the disks is available. - Always verify the current drive firmware by going
to the Settings tab and choosing the Update
option and taking note of the software version.
13Drive Rebuild Verification
- Wipe down the drive to remove any fingerprints
and other markings - Repackage the drive in the approved Iomega
shipping container - Return the drive to inventory
