3
Make the Connection
  • Homogeneous mixture
  • Heterogeneous mixture
  • Colloid
  • Suspension
  • Solution
  • Mixtures that looks uniform when shaken but
    separates when no longer agitated.
  • Mixture of immiscible liquids in which liquids
    are spread throughout one another.
  • Mixtures that are uniform
  • Mixtures that are not uniform
  • Mixtures of tiny particles of pure substances
that are dispersed in another substance but do
    not settle

4
Making Mixtures
  • Suspensions
  • Paints - Pigments are suspended particles in the
liquid phase. To prevent settling, materials
    called surfactants are used.
  • Colloids
  • Milk Oily fats and water combine through
interactions with proteins (that serve like
surfactants) and homogenization (high energy to
    break down fat particles).
  • Solutions
  • Inks Washable marker inks contain dyes
    that are soluble in water
  • Components of a Solution
  • Solute the substance that dissolves in a
    solution
  • Solvent the substance that dissolves the
    solute to make a solution

5
Mix it easier
  • Increase surface area
  • Mixing or Stirring
  • Applying heat

6
Exercises
  • Experiment 1
  • Add sugar cube to beaker 1
  • Grind sugar cube transfer to beaker 2
  • Grind another sugar cube and add to beaker 3
  • Add 100 mL of cold water to beakers 1 and 2
  • Add 100 mL of hot water to beaker 3
  • Stir all beakers. What conditions were best to
    dissolve the sugar?

7
Exercises
  • Experiment 2
  • Add water to oil in vial, shake. What happens?
  • Add water to oil in vial and 5 drops of
    emulsifier, shake.
  • What happens?

8
Exercises
  • Experiment 3
  • Measure 0.5 g pigment and add to 9.5 g of putty.
  • Knead to mix.

9
Final Exam
  • Salt water, food coloring dyes
  • Fruit salad, most of all Crayola products
  • Jell-O, paint resins
  • Orange juice, salad oil
  • Milk, some paints and inks
  • Salt water, inks
  • Water, paint thinner
