The PMBOK guide is an attempt to document the
generally accepted PM information and practices
and has since become the standard amongst project
management around the globe.

The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)
is a collection of processes and knowledge areas
generally accepted as best practice within the
project management discipline. As an
internationally recognized standard (IEEE Std
1490-2003) it provides the fundamentals of
project management, irrespective of the type of
project be it construction, software,
engineering, automotive etc.
PMBOK recognizes 5 basic process groups
containing 42 processes and 9_knowledge areas
typical of almost all projects.
  • Processes overlap and interact throughout a
    project or phase.
  • Processes are described in terms of
  • Inputs (documents, plans, designs, etc.)
  • Tools and Techniques (mechanisms applied to
    inputs)
  • Outputs (documents, products, etc.)

4
  • The Project Management Knowledge Areas organize
the 42 project management processes into nine
    Knowledge Areas.
  • 1. Integration Management
  • 2. Scope Management
  • 3. Time Management
  • 4. Cost Management
  • 5. Quality Management
  • 6. HR Management
  • 7. Communication Management
  • 8. Risk Management
  • 9. Procurement Management
  • Project Management Knowledge Areas describe the
key competencies that project managers must
    develop.
  • Four core knowledge areas lead to specific
project objectives (scope, time, cost, and
    quality).
  • Four facilitating knowledge areas are the
means through which the project objectives are
    achieved (human resources, communication, risk,
    and procurement management).
  • One knowledge area (project integration
management) affects and is affected by all of the
    other knowledge areas.
