HighScope Key Develomental Indicators (KDIs)
  • Within the content areas are 58 Key Developmental
    Indicators.
  • The KDIs are based on current child development
    research and national and state early learning
    standards
  • They are written to be universal. Teachers and
    caregivers from different cultures in the United
    States and other countries report that they see
    children engaging in the KDIs
  • Teachers use the KDIs to guide all aspects of the
    program.

  • Developmental Recognizes that learning is
    gradual and cumulative
  • Indicators Emphasize that educators need
    evidence that children are developing knowledge,
    skills and understanding considered important for

Purpose of the KDIs
  • To focus adults observations and interpretations
    of childrens actions
  • To help adults maintain reasonable expectations
    for children and support childrens emerging
    capacities
  • To help answer questions about the legitimacy of
    childrens play
  • To guide decisions about materials and the daily
    routine

KDI Card Game
  1. Read each KDI card and place it under the
    appropriate KDI category. The number of KDIs in
    each category are given below to assist you.

  1. Divide into groups of 2 or 3.
  2. Follow the instructions in your training booklet
    as you go from station to station.
  3. When you have finished each station, discuss what
    you found out about the KDIs.

Searching for the KDIs
  1. read the work time scenario and identify as many
    KDIs as you can using the list on page 3 of your
    training booklet.
  2. Turn to a partner and share what youve found.

  1. On index cards, write down one thing you have
    seen children in your classroom doing in each of
    the content areas.
  2. Exchange your cards with another group.
  3. Determine which KDI each card is describing.
