Childhood and Schoolyears

• Shelley was born in Horsham, England
• He had five sisters and a brother
• In 1804 he entered Eton college
• On 10 April 1810, he matriculated at University
  College, Oxford
• Got sent down from Oxford after publishing The
  Necessity of Atheism

First Marriage

• His first wife was Harriet Westbrook
• Shelley was 19 years old, Harriet was 16
• On 28 July 1814, Shelley abandoned his pregnant
  wife and his child

Mary Shelley

• Her father was the political philosopher William
  Godwin.
• Her mother was the philosopher and feminist Mary
  Wollstonecraft.
• She met Percy while he was visiting her fathers
  home and bookshop in London.

Connections with Byron

• P. B. Shelley met Byron in Switzerland
• They had conversations that had invigorating
  effect on Shelley
• Shelley was inspired to write his "Hymn to
  Intellectual Beauty"

Final Years in Italy and Shelleys Death

• Early in 1818, the Shelleys left to Italy
• Percy wrote there his Prometheus Unbound
• On 8 July 1822, less than a month before his
  30th birthday, Shelley drowned in a sudden storm
