- Founded in 1978
- Mission Dramatically improve the performance of
at-risk students through research-based
interventions - 70 million dollars of contracted RD
- 275,000 teachers in 3,500 school districts

- For 25 years, they have conducted research
designed to develop ways to help students meet
the demands of life, not just in school but after
they leave school as well. - The overriding goal has been to develop an
integrated model to address many of the needs of
diverse learners.
6Strategic Instruction Model (SIM)
- Out of this effort, the Strategic Instruction
Model, or SIM, has evolved. - In essence, SIM is about promoting effective
teaching and learning of critical content in
schools. - SIM strives to help teachers make decisions about
what is of greatest importance, what we can teach
students to help them to learn, and how to teach
them well. - We advocate trying to teach a little less
content, but teaching it better.

- The Strategic Instruction Model is an integrated
model of research-validated practices to address
many of the needs of diverse learners. It has
been under development for 25 years at the
University of Kansas-Center for Research on
Learning.

- Approaches to teaching students how to think
about and solve problems, orteaching students
how to learn - Learning strategies are used by students to help
them understand information and solve problems. - A learning strategy is a person's approach to
learning and using information.

significant will happen!
- Execution is the great unaddressed issue in the
business world today. Its absence is the single
biggest obstacle to success and the cause of many
of the disappointments that are mistakenly
attributed to other causes - The key to making strategic instruction a reality
is to realize that it takes time (months-years)
and a strong administrative and instructional
commitment.
