2INTRODUCTION
The World Conservation Union (IUCN) says that
more than 40 percent of species that have been
assessed worldwide are threatened with
extinction.
These include a quarter of the world's coniferous
trees, an eighth of its birds, and one-third of
its amphibians. Also listed are a quarter of all
the mammal species that were assessed for the
survey.
3MAMMALS
ENDANGERED SPECIES
POLAR BEARS for the first time join more than
16,000 species threatened with extinction.
They are likely to become one of the most notable
casualties of global warming, which causes
melting of sea ice on which they roam in search
of Arctic seals. Without enough ice, the bears
risk being trapped on land, where they face
starvation. Or they may drown in attempts to swim
long distance.
It is estimated that 800 PANDAS live in the wild
and roughly 100 live in captivity, mostly in
zoos, breeding centres and special reserves in
China. Yet despite all the efforts to save the
panda, there is a real risk that it will become
extinct. Farming, development and clear-cutting
have destroyed the bamboo forests that make up
their natural habitat.Six isolated mountain
ranges in the Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu
provinces of western China are reserved for
pandas .
4BIRDS
ENDANGERED
TOUCANS
They live in the woody regions and the forest of
Central America and tropical South America. The
rain forests of the world are shrinking, which is
the major reason they are endangered.
HARPY EAGLES are found in Southwestern Mexico
Central and South America. They live in the rain
forest. They are getting rarer and rarer because
of forest fragmentation, their nesting sites have
been destroyed, and they are being shot. No one
knows how many harpy eagles there are in the
world, but it is confirmed that 9 nests are in
Guyana, 10 in Venezuela, and 8 in Panama.
5SEA CREATURES
ENDANGERED
The LOGGERHEAD SEA TURTLES are protected in their
breeding grounds in Turkey, Greece, Bonaire and
Costa Rica. The turtles can also be found around
the island of Lampedusa, off the coast of Sicily.
The Loggerhead Sea Turtle was once intensively
hunted for their meat and eggs, along with their
fat which was used in cosmetics and medication.
They are often injured by speedboat propellers
and by swallowing fishing hooks or getting caught
in nets.
Orcas, also known as KILLER WHALES, live in
every ocean around the world. Killer Whales are
hunted for zoo and aquarium exhibits and killed
by people. They are also endangered by ocean
pollution, and loss of breeding and hunting
grounds.
6WHAT WE CAN DO TO PROTECT THEM
WE MUST SAVE THE FOREST TO BE ABLE TO SAVE THE
ANIMALS. ALTHOUGH OUR HOME MAY PROVIDE SHELTER
FOR SOME ANIMALS,THE FOREST CAN HOLD FAR MORE
NUMBER OF SPECIES OF ANIMALS. MOREOVER, THE
FOREST HELPS TO MAKE THE EARTH A COOLER PLACE.
THIS WILL THEN SLOW DOWN THE MELTING OF THE ICE
CAPS DUE TO GLOBAL WARMING,SO THAT POLAR BEARS,
ARTIC FOXES AND MANY OTHER ANIMALS CAN CONTINUE
TO THRIVE IN THEIR NATURAL HABITAT AND WON'T
BECOME EXTINCT. WE SHOULD ALSO STOP POLLUTING THE
AIR( AND CYCLE TO SCHOOL INSTEAD!) AND THE
OCEANS.SO FAR WE HAVE NOT BEEN RECYCLING ENOUGH.
AND WE HAVE TO SAVE PAPER TO SAVE THE FOREST (IT
TAKES 150 TREES TO MAKE ONE SHEET OF PAPER!)
SAVE THE FOREST!
