Decision Making

Competency
  • Competency
  • 207-4 The Child Welfare Professional can use
assessment data to collaboratively develop an
appropriate, culturally competent case plan with
the family, and can develop and link supportive
    family and community resources.

3
Learning Objectives
  • Participants will be able to
  • Identify how the Family Finding model supports
casework best practice and child welfare
    legislation and guidance.
  • Put into action the Family Finding model and
    related techniques.

4
Review
  • What are the six steps of the Family Finding
    model?
  • What are the best practice steps to work within
    the confines of assuring confidentiality?
  • What are the goals of a Blended Perspectives
    Meeting?
  • Who is invited to a Blended Perspectives Meeting?
  • How long should a Blended Perspectives Meeting
    last?

5
Step Four Decision Making
  • Goal
  • The team with the social worker will make timely
decisions that provide the young person with
appropriate levels of affection and belonging
that are expected to be enduring.

    Presented by Kevin Campbell.

6
Step Four Decision Making (contd)
  •  Practice
  • The team involved in planning will work with a
sense of urgency, fully and candidly informed
about the needs of the child or young person and
the expected consequences of not having a safe
    forever family.

7
Step Four Decision Making (contd)
  • Practice
  • The team will be prepared to make key, informed
decisions about the future of the young person,
including their safety, physical and emotional
well-being and belonging in a lifetime family.
Teams will meet with an understanding that
    long-term placement(s) without legal permanency
are not considered a successful decision.

    Presented by Kevin Campbell.

8
Alternative Methods of Decision Making
  • Team Decision Making this is very similar to
Family Group Decision Making, except there is no
Private Family Time. This is still a family
driven meeting, but decisions are made by the
family, agencies and service providers together.
  • Family Meeting this would normally occur at a
family or kin members home and without the
    attendance of agencies or providers.
  • Court Hearing it is possible for the team and
the agency and providers to develop and make
decisions for three plans at a court hearing.

9
Goals that the Family DecisionsNeed to Address
  • Where will the child have a permanent home?
  • Who are the responsible parties involved in
getting the child in his or her permanent home
    and keeping that child there?
  • What needs will have to be met in order for the
child to have a successful future? (remembering
that treatment or a service is not a need)

10
Goals that the Family DecisionsNeed to Address
(contd)
  • How will the Network for Life support the young
    person and caregiver(s)?
  • When will this plan take action? (needs to be a
    concrete deadline)
  • Who will reconvene the team in the future if
further decisions need to be made?

11
Ways Families Can Inform the Agency
  • Written document from the family
  • Reconvene those who participated in the Decision
    Making meeting
  • The family can invite agency representative to a
family members home to discuss the plans.
  • The family can identify a spokesperson to notify
the agency of decisions that were reached.
