7Map of Virtual Museums network
8Virtual Museums
- Virtual Museums are a new model of communication
aimed at creating a personalized, immersive,
interactive way to enhance our understanding of
the world around us. - Virtual Museum is a short-cut commonly used to
identify different digital creations (i.e. VR
applications, CG animations, multimedia,
web-based presentations, etc.). VMs, as
formulated at the beginning of the 90s, are aimed
at creating a bridge to the remains of our past
and their knowledge. A fundamental requirement is
therefore the focus they should have on users. - Experience is therefore the key word
interactivity, immersivity, narrative
9Virtual Museum expectations
- Creation of a personalized, immersive,
interactive way to enhance our understanding of
the world around us. - identify different potential realities of the
information, reaching to a cognitive increment of
the heritage. - Experience is therefore the key word
interactivity, immersivity, narrative - in the 90s most part of research projects in
virtual heritage were visual oriented in the 3rd
millennium they will be cybernetic-oriented
(multi-user shared interaction also over the web)
10Virtual Museums delusions
- Not reaching a sufficient level of maturity, such
as Cinema or Game - Disconnection between the research and the
industry (many pilots, fragmentation) - The life-cycle of many installation is still very
limited in time important long-lasting projects
are today completely lost and inaccessible, due
also to the lack of preservation policies. An
entire digital patrimony is in danger due to the
lack of a shared methodology for preserving
content.

- Risks
- Economical
- Cultural
- Digital
13Time for a Network of Excellence
- V-MusT.net will study and assess the current
technologies and methodologies for VMs future
preservation and the impact on the lifecycle of
VMs, trying to bring digital preservation to a
more practical level and fostering the adoption
of these technologies in this specific domain. - V-MusT.net main expectation is to create a wide
consensus, that will be a stimulus for the
creation of the next generation Virtual Museum.
The wide consensus will be based on the sharing
of a common language and of a common practical
experience, acquired on the ground during a
challenging 4-years experiment (Interactive Lab).
The next generation Virtual Museum will be more
communicative and effective, more sustainable
(re-usable, exchangeable), more accessible and
visible in public spaces or on line.
14Opportunities for young researchers
- V-MusTer Class Training program
- V-MusT.net Development Camp The Development Camp
is conceived as an instrument that will allow the
consortium to stay open to new ideas,
technologies or requirements that could emerge
during the lifetime of the project it will be an
instrument oriented to both the project partners
and to the contribution and inclusion of the
external world. - V-Move program (intern-ship)
- Calls for micro-projects
15 What does V-MusT.net do ?
- Shape the Next Generation Museum
- Correct use of digital technology
- Quality and fitness of use
- Robustness and portability
- Re-usability Exchange

Amsterdam, Rome, Sarajevo - Common virtual backbone, connecting 4 parallel
exhibitions on site / on line - Focus on Roman collections
- Cutting edge technology Interactivity and
experience - But also durable and eye for maintenance
- Next 4 years testing and evaluation on test-beds
