EPI - Background
  • Started in November 1976, as pilot project.
  • Confined to Nowshera and Peshawar.
  • Expanded to hospitals DHQ/AHQ).
  • Initially for controlling 5 diseases and now
    Immunization against 8 diseases
  • Now operational in most of the union councils of
    the province
  • Converted to the regular budget since 1996.

Objectives
  • General Objectives
  • Reduction of mortality and morbidity resulting
    from EPI target diseases by immunizing children
    under 1-2 year and pregnant women.
  • Specific objectives.
  • Stop indigenous poliovirus transmission
  • Elimination of Neo-Natal Tetanus, by the year
    2010.
  • Reduction in Measles mortality by 95 and
    Measles morbidity by 90 by 2011.
  • Reduction of Diphtheria, Pertussis, Hepatitis B,
    and Childhood Tuberculosis ,HIB, Meningitis to a
    minimum level.
  • Control of other diseases by introducing new
    vaccines in EPI.
