Title: HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS

1
HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS MATERIALS
2
Q WHAT IS A HAZARDOUS MATERIAL ?
A Any substance which has the potential to cause
harm or damage to people, property, or the
environment. These substances can come in several
forms.
LIQUIDS
GAS OR VAPOR
SOLIDS
May Be Invisible !
H2S GAS CLOUD
RAW SULPHUR
MDEA IN BARRELS

6
TYPES OF HAZARDS
  • THERE ARE 8 BASIC CLASSIFICATIONS OF HAZARDOUS
    MATERIALS
  • COMPRESSED GAS
  • FLAMMABLE OR COMBUSTIBLE MATERIALS
  • OXIDIZING MATERIALS
  • POISONOUS AND INFECTIOUS MATERIALS
  • MATERIALS CAUSING IMMEDIATE SERIOUS TOXIC
    EFFECTS
  • MATERIALS CAUSING OTHER TOXIC EFFECTS
  • CORROSIVE MATERIAL
  • DANGEROUSLY REACTIVE MATERIAL

7
TYPES OF HAZARDS
COMPRESSED GAS
8
COMPRESSED GAS CYLINDER
Always secure when using or storing. If valve or
regulator is broken, it may cause a fire,
explosion or take off like a rocket
Contents under pressure. Contents may be
flammable, poisonous, and/or reactive. Check
here for warning label

Plan - Work
  • Task check the quality of NaOH before
transferring it to Unit 114 - Train 1
  • Result loss of sight ...

28
Anomalies...
  • Collect sample from drain line access ? flow
    rate ?
  • Use of plastic bottle ex. mineral water
    spillage, resistant (chemical, heat), static
    electricity, mistaken as potable water
  • No PPE

29
LIQUID SAMPLING
Use only approved sample bottles. DO NOT USE
WATER BOTTLES!!!
30
Chemical PPE (1)
Handling Concentrates
This is the minimum protective clothing
and equipment you should wear while dealing
with chemicals which are moderately to highly
toxic
Face shield or goggles Respirator (If the
MSDS or label requires it)
Protective suit (such as fabric coveralls)
worn over normal work clothes
Chemical-resistant apron
Chemical-resistant gloves such as rubber, vinyl,
or plastic. (Never use fabric, leather or paper
gloves)
Chemical-resistant boots or footwear (Never wear
leather or canvas footwear)
31
Chemical PPE (2)
Diluted Chemicals

(Such as direct contact with spray, mist, or
handling very highly toxic chemicals)
Chemical-resistant hood or hat
Goggles or face shield
Respirator (If the MSDS or label requires it or
if mists, fogs, or vapors will be generated)
Protective suit (such as fabric coveralls)
worn over normal work clothes
Chemical-resistant protective suit worn over
normal work clothes (A chemical-resistant
protective suit may cause heat stress under some
conditions)
Chemical-resistant gloves such as rubber, vinyl,
or plastic. (Never use fabric, leather or paper
gloves)
Chemical-resistant gloves such as rubber, vinyl,
or plastic (Never use fabric, leather, or paper
gloves)
Chemical-resistant boots or footwear (Never wear
leather or canvas footwear)
Socks and shoes or boots
32
FOR USE WHEN HANDLING CHEMICALS
USE SAFETY GLASSES ONLY WHEN YOU WEAR A FULL FACE
SHIELD

Eyewash station
Emergency shower with eyewash
Eyewash Station
Eyewash Bottles
What? Where?
Before starting, find emergency water points
Even a fire hydrant can be used to flush
chemicals off of a person
37
Physical Contacts Eyes
JUST IN CASE you accidentally get something in
your eyes, go directly to the nearest eyewash
station (within 100 ft of your work area) and
flush your eyes with water for 15 minutes. Be
sure to hold your eyes open with your fingers and
look directly into the water streams. DO NOT
RUB YOUR EYES ! Rubbing your eyes may scratch or
embed particles into your eyes. Once you have
flushed your eyes with water, seek medical
attention immediately. REMEMBER 5555 ! Or
EMERGENCY RADIO CHANNEL. Some chemicals are
water reactive and become toxic when mixed with
water. Talk with your supervisor or HSE about the
chemicals you will be using on your job. Be
familiar with the MSDS for all chemicals used in
your job.
38
Physical Contacts Body
If any part of your body is in contact with
corrosive chemicals (NaOH, H2SO4, HCl) go
directly to the nearest safety shower and flush
your body and clothes with large amounts of
water. Quickly remove all contaminated clothing
including footwear. Wash affected areas with
water (and soap if available) for at least 15
minutes. Seek medical attention immediately.
REMEMBER 5555 ! Or EMERGENCY RADIO
CHANNEL. Again Some chemicals are water
reactive and become toxic when mixed with water.
IF IN DOUBT ASK
39
Conclusion
  • Plan your work and follow your plan
  • Know the hazards and remedial actions for all
    materials you are handling
  • Check MSDS before starting your task
  • Wear appropriate PPE and have an emergency plan
  • Know where eyewash, emergency showers, and first
    aid kits are located
  • Call 5555 in event of an emergency
