3George WashingtonThe Father of our Country
- George Washington was elected as the 1st
President of the USA. - He provided strong leadership to the young
country. He showed how to be a good leader for
all the future leaders and Presidents.
His home was Mount Vernon, near Alexandria, VA.
His house is near the Potomac River.
4Thomas JeffersonAn Author and A President
- 3rd President
- Drafted the Declaration of Independence
- Drafted the Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom
His home was Monticello in Charlottesville,
Virginia.
5Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom of 1786
- Thomas Jefferson led the fight for religious
freedom and separation of church and state in
Virginia. - Before this, everyone belonged to the Anglican
Church. They had to attend its services and
support the church by paying taxes. - This document stated that all people should have
the freedom to worship as they choose.
6James MadisonThe Father of the Constitution
- Madison believed in the importance of the
Constitution. He kept detailed notes during the
Constitutional Convention. He helped the
delegates compromise and reach agreements.
His home was Montpelier, in Orange, Virginia.
7George Mason wrote theVirginia Declaration of
Rights
- This document states that all Virginians should
have many rights, including freedom of religion
and freedom of press. - This will serve as the model for the U.S. Bill of
Rights.

- The law (set of rules) that we live by.
- The Constitution says how the government works.
- The Constitution lists some key rights.
The Bill of Rights is a part of the Constitution.
It lists many rights of the people.

- The Constitution is organized into 3 parts
- Preamble Introduces the Constitution. It starts
with We the People - Articles Establishes how the government is
structured and how the Constitution can be
changed. There are seven articles. - Amendments Changes to the Constitution the
first ten are called the Bill of Rights.
10After the American Revolution, Virginias
agriculture began to change. Many large farms
moved west or to the deep south to find better
farmland and more opportunities.
Cumberland Gap
Settlers crossed the Appalachian Mountains
through the Cumberland Gap as they migrated west.
11Why Move West?
- Tobacco farming was hard on the soil.
- Virginians migrated into western territories
looking for large areas of land. - As Virginians moved,
- they took their traditions
- and culture with them.
