  folks who wanted to look for something, perhaps
  something spiritual or transcendental, that went
  against the grain of conservative or SQUARE
  society.

• Gone in beatnik slang referred to something
  very good, something quite desirableas in, That
  Cadillac is one gone set of wheels.

• Solid in beatnik slang was used to denote
  something that was good, something heartily
  approvedas in Lets take in the new art
  movie. Solid!

• A beatnik goes into a diner and says, How are
  the blueberry pies?
• The blueberry pies are gone, sir.
• Solid, says the beatnik, Ill take two slices.
